Jake Gyllenhaal is irrefutably one of the most popular and talented stars in the world. He’s an Oscar nominee for his work in Brokeback Mountain, the 2005 drama co-starring Heath Ledger, and he recently scored his first Emmy nomination for his performance in the Apple TV series, Presumed Innocent. Gyllenhaal is arguably best known for his gripping and nearly unrecognizable performance in Nightcrawler, but almost every year, he can be seen starring in an action or drama that builds a large audience either in theaters or on streaming. However, his next film has the potential to be one of his most successful projects yet.
Jake Gyllenhaal has been tapped to star in a new action thriller titled Kill Switch, which is being described as a mash-up of Sicario and Collateral. The former is a thrilling neo-Western written by Taylor Sheridan and directed by Denis Villeneuve, and the latter is a classic action/crime thriller starring Tom Cruise with a cameo from Jason Statham. News broke this afternoon that, after a lengthy bidding war for Kill Switch, Netflix has emerged as the victor, acquiring the film’s rights for distribution. This does mean it will likely miss out on a wide theatrical release.
Plot specifics about Kill Switch are being kept under wraps, but the film’s creative team is certainly exciting. Matt Reeves, famed for his work on the Planet of the Apes movies and for directing The Batman, is producing alongside Jake Gyllenhaal. The script for Kill Switch comes from Harrison Query, who recently wrote Prime Video’s biggest surprise sleeper hit of 2025, Head of State. The action thriller stars John Cena and Idris Elba. Kill Switch does not yet have a director, but a search for someone to step behind the camera is underway.
What Else Does Jake Gyllenhaal Have in the Works?
Kill Switch is one of many exciting projects Jake Gyllenhaal has in the works that are likely to be released soon. March and April will be huge for the star — he’ll first be seen starring in The Bride!, which is being directed by his sister Maggie Gyllenhaal. In April, he’ll star alongside Henry Cavill in Guy Ritchie’s new action thriller, In The Grey, which was previously gestating without a release date for years. He’ll close out the year by starring in M. Night Shyamalan’s long-awaited new thriller, Remain, which is based on a novel Shyamalan wrote with Nicholas Sparks.
