‘The Mummy 4’: Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz’s Epic Return Sets May 2028 Release Date!!

Fans of The Mummy rejoiced when Universal announced last year that Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz were returning to the franchise for a new film. While the studio still has a long time to go before the movie wraps up, the studio has now announced a release date for the film. Don’t hold your breath, though, as it won’t hit the big screen for over two years.

The film is set to hit theaters on May 19, 2028, almost 30 years after the original film graced screens in 1999. It will be directed by the horror film-making collective Radio Silence, who have already dipped their toes in the Universal Horror waters with 2024’s Abigail, a loose remake of 1936’s Dracula’s Daughter. The script will be penned by David Coggeshall (Orphan: First Kill). Plot details are being kept entombed for now, but the film will reportedly be a sequel to The Mummy and 2001’s The Mummy Returns, but will disregard the events of 2008’s The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, which did feature Fraser, but Weisz‘ role was recast with Maria Bello; that film was the lowest-grossing and most poorly reviewed of the three films.

What Happens in ‘The Mummy’ Movies?

In The Mummy, Weisz plays Cairo librarian Evelyn Carnahan, who bands together with her louche brother Jonathan (John Hannah) and adventurer Rick O’Connell (Fraser) in 1926 to find the fabled lost Egyptian city of the dead, Hamunaptra. As they race against a rival expedition guided by Rick’s treacherous ex-comrade Beni (Kevin J. O’Connor), they accidentally unleash Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo), a rogue Egyptian priest who was mummified alive thousands of years ago. With the help of Ardeth Bey (Oded Fehr), a member of an ancient order dedicated to keeping Hamunaptra a secret, they must return Imhotep to his eternal rest before he gains the power of a god. In the sequel, The Mummy Returns, Rick and Evelyn have married and had a young son, Alex (Freddie Boath); they, Jonathan, and Bey soon get wrapped up in a plot by the resurrected Imhotep and his reincarnated lover Meela Nais (Patricia Velásquez) to unleash the power of the ancient Scorpion King (Dwayne Johnson).

The new Fraser-Weisz Mummy film has no relation to Evil Dead Rise director Lee Cronin‘s The Mummy, which is set to be released by New Line Cinema in April. It stars Jack Reynor, Laia Costa, and May Calamawy.

A new The Mummy film, reuniting Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, will be released in theaters on May 19, 2028.
