It’s been a rough start to the year thus far for Jason Statham, who is the headlining star in the new action thriller, Shelter. The film opened with the best reviews for a Statham actioner in over 10 years, but that has unfortunately not influenced its performance at the box office — the film has grossed less than $30 million, all the while carrying a $50 million budget. Statham has plenty of other movies coming down the pipe to look forward to, though, including Mutiny, which arrives this August and co-stars Annabelle Wallis (Peaky Blinders). At the start of 2027, Statham will also reprise his role as Adam Clay in a sequel to The Beekeeper, which will be directed by Timo Tjahjanto instead of David Ayer.
Statham has worked with plenty of directors multiple times over the years, but one he has only worked with once is David Leitch. Leitch made his feature directorial debut in 2017 on Atomic Blonde, and he later followed that up with Deadpool 2 the year after. One year post-Deadpool 2, Leitch worked with Statham for the first time on the massive Fast & Furious blockbuster spin-off, Hobbs & Shaw, which co-stars Dwayne Johnson and Vanessa Kirby. Leitch has been busy for the past seven years since Hobbs & Shaw hit theaters, though, first working with Brad Pitt on Bullet Train. His last directorial outing came in 2024 on The Fall Guy, the classic action blockbuster starring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt. Fans have been clamoring for years to see a sequel to Hobbs & Shaw, and although writer Chris Morgan admits he’s working on a script, there have been few concrete updates on the project since.
Jason Statham Is Finally Reuniting With David Leitch
News broke this afternoon that Statham is attached to star in a new meta-action comedy, which has been titled Jason Statham Stole My Bike. That’s right, Statham will play himself in a new action feature, which is being directed by David Leitch. Plot details about the film are being kept under wraps for now, but it has been reported that the budget will be around $80 million, larger than the recent price range of around $40-50 million for The Beekeeper, A Working Man, and Shelter. It’s also being billed as “the role of a lifetime” for Statham, and it will reportedly have multiple large action set pieces.
