‘Bishop’: John Malkovich Joins Joel Kinnaman in New Prime Video Thriller Series!!

Cross and Reacher have become solid hits for Prime Video, and the streamer has another gritty crime thriller in the works that also happens to be titled after its main character, but in a subversion of the formula, Bishop is his character’s first name. Joel Kinnaman will star as Bishop Graves in the new series, and now we know what Oscar-nominated actor he’ll be facing off against.

According to reports, John Malkovich will star in the series as Lincoln Graves, San Francisco’s most-feared power broker. His son, Bishop, is a battle-scarred police detective on the trail of a killer who’s targeting the city’s elite. As the killer becomes a cause célèbre among the city’s underclass, Graves soon finds that all of his clues are leading him in one direction: back to his father. The series will be Prime Video‘s latest forway into the crime thriller genre; in addition to the aforementioned Cross and Reacher, the streamer has had success with the long-running Bosch, its sequel series Bosch: Legacy, and the currently running spin-off Ballard. Next on the police blotter is Scarpetta, an adaptation of Kathy Reichs‘ long-running series of crime novels; the series stars Nicole Kidman in the title role, and will premiere next month.

Who Is John Malkovich?

A native of Illinois, Malkovich was a charter member of Chicago’s storied Steppenwolf Theatre Company, alongside Joan Allen and Gary Sinise. He made his feature debut in 1984’s Places in the Heart, earning an Oscar nomination for his role as a blind World War I veteran. His distinctively reedy voice and intense manner have often led him to play villains, including a would-be assassin in In the Line of Fire (which earned him his second Oscar nomination), a psychopathic convict in Con Air, and a Russian mobster in Rounders. However, one of his most memorable on-screen roles saw him playing himself; in the surreal black comedy Being John Malkovich, he plays a fictionalized version of himself who can be controlled by entering a mysterious doorway in an office building. Bishop won’t be his first foray into television; he won an Emmy for his role in a TV production of Death of a Salesman in 1985, and has been a regular on series like Billions, The New Pope, and The New Look.

The series will be created and showrun by Little Marvin (Them). He will also executive produce the series with Tony Salzman (Dexter: Resurrection), and Vertigo‘s Roy Lee and Miri Yoon, who produced Zach Cregger‘s sleeper hit Weapons last year.

Bishop is in development at Prime Video; no release date has yet been announced.
