‘Star Trek: Year One’: Planned ‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ Sequel Series Gets Troubling Update!!

With an impressive 94% critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the soon-to-be-concluded Star Trek series created by Akiva Goldsman, Alex Kurtzman, and Jenny Lumet is widely regarded as the best modern franchise series. Made for Paramount+, the series is the 11th in the acclaimed sci-fi franchise, a spin-off from Star Trek: Discovery, and debuted in 2022 as part of Kurtzman‘s expanded Star Trek Universe.

Scheduled to wrap up after five seasons, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds returns with Season 4 this year and a shortened Season 5 sometime in 2027, though premiere dates have yet to be announced. In the meantime, we have news about the show’s potential sequel, which Goldsman previously touched on at San Diego Comic-Con 2025, describing it as a continuation spin-off that would show the first year under the command of Paul Wesley’s James T. Kirk as the USS Enterprise’s new captain.

Tentatively titled Star Trek: Year One, Strange New Worlds co-showrunner Henry Alonso Myers and Goldsman are still “one hundred percent” interested in the project as they “think it would be a great [show].” However, according to Myers during an interview at the Saturn Awards, “it’s out of our hands.” He also revealed they have officially pitched Star Trek: Year One to Paramount, saying:

“Yeah, we’ve brought them a lot. We’ve done a lot to give to them. It’s in their hands right now. They’re taking a look at it, trying to decide it. I mean, there’s a lot of love for our show over there, and obviously a lot of love for Star Trek.”

Will the Next Star Trek Sequel Ever Be Realized?

As a prequel to Star Trek: The Original Series, which ran from September 8, 1966, to June 3, 1969, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds follows Captain Christopher Pike and the crew of Enterprise in the 23rd century during the decade before The Original Series. With the sci-fi sequel nearing its end, fans naturally await good news about its follow-up, which, unfortunately, may take a while. However, it’s worth noting that the sets for Strange New Worlds are still up, as Myers divulged, which is a positive sign for Star Trek: Year One. The showrunner also pointed out that, even though Paramount owns the stages, they still have a decision to make:

“That makes this the big decision for them, because, it’s about, do you hold on to the sets, currently? As I said, they have not been destroyed, so we’re waiting to find out what they want to do.”
