According to Variety, Jada Pinkett Smith will reprise her role as Lena James in Netflix’s upcoming sequel series to A Different World. She teased the return in an Instagram post showing a photo of her trailer door labeled with her character’s name and captioned “She back #ADifferentWorld.” Strong Black Lead also shared the image, and Netflix later reposted it on its Instagram Story.

Reports revealed Netflix began developing the sequel series in 2024 and picked it up to series in November 2025. Like the original show, the new series takes place at the fictional historically Black college Hillman College. Maleah Joi Moon leads the cast as Deborah Wayne, the daughter of original characters Dwayne Wayne and Whitney Gilbert.

The show’s official logline states that it “follows Deborah as she enters her freshman year at her parents’ HBCU alma mater and finds the shadow of her parents difficult to escape. She sets out to build her own legacy while having the time of her life alongside a new generation of Hillman’s best and brightest.” Pinkett Smith’s return marks her comeback.

Other returning cast members include Jasmine Guy as Whitley Gilbert, Kadeem Hardison as Dwayne Wayne, Cree Summer as Freddie Brooks, and Darryl M. Bell as Ron Johnson. They will appear on a recurring basis across ten half-hour episodes from showrunner and executive producer Felicia Pride. Additional cast members include Alijah Kai as Rashida, Chibuikem Uche as Kojo, Cornell Young IV as Shaquille, Jordan Aaron Hall as Amir, and newcomer Kennedi Reece as Hazel. The original A Different World aired for six seasons on NBC from 1987 to 1993. Pinkett Smith joined the series as Lena James shortly before its fifth season and remained part of the cast.
