Paul W.S. Anderson is set to direct two horror adaptations based on novels by bestselling author Kevin J. Anderson. The filmmaker is best known for his science fiction movies and video game adaptations, including the first six films in the Resident Evil franchise.
According to Deadline, the films will adapt Nether Station and Nether Vortex, a sci-fi horror duology written by Kevin J. Anderson. The English filmmaker will also produce both projects alongside longtime collaborator Jeremy Bolt, Weird Tales President John Harlacher, and the company’s VP of Film, Tony Eldridge. Jonathan Wakeham has been tapped to adapt the novels for the big screen.
Anderson most recently directed In the Lost Lands, starring Mila Jovovich and Dave Bautista. The 2025 film became a box-office disappointment, grossing just $3.6 million worldwide against a reported $55 million budget.
How Kevin J. Anderson’s novels bring cosmic horror back into the spotlight
The novels follow Cammie Skoura, a neurodivergent young scientist who joins a deep-space expedition. During the journey, she and her crew stumble upon ancient ruins and the remains of long-dead alien civilizations.
Their investigation eventually leads to a discovery that threatens everything they know about the universe. Cammie serves as the story’s central character, with her role drawing comparisons to Beth Harmon, the chess prodigy portrayed by Anya Taylor-Joy in Netflix’s The Queen’s Gambit.
For W.S. Anderson, the adaptations take him back to a familiar genre he explored in his early career with Paramount’s Event Horizon. Kevin J. Anderson has cited the 1997 film as a direct influence on Nether Station.
“Space is scary—think of how terrifying it would be all alone out in the cold, dark, oblivion?” Kevin J. Anderson told Deadline. He added that he could not imagine a better director for the project.
The director expressed his long-standing admiration for the books, praising their Lovecraftian themes and Cammie’s unique perspective as key elements for “an unbelievably compelling and terrifying cinema experience.”
Neither film has set an official production timeline, casting lineup, or theatrical release date.
