‘New Sunnydale’: ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ Reboot Cancelled by Hulu!!

A few times every decade, there is a show that comes around that’s so popular, it lives on as a continued streaming success that inspired countless shows to come after. Back in the 1990s, this was Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the hit teen horror show following a young woman who is destined to slay vampires and other monsters, who lives out her destiny with the help of her best friends. The series was led by Sarah Michelle Gellar, who is also famous for her work playing Daphne in the live-action Scooby-Doo movies, and for her role as Helen Shivers in I Know What You Did Last Summer. Gellar had even been tapped to reprise her signature role as Buffy Summers in the new Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot series, which was in the works from Eternals director Chloé Zhao.

The Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot project, titled New Sunnydale, was set to follow Buffy as she trains a new monster-slaying apprentice. Lila and Nora Zuckerman were developing the project along with Zhao, and it had built out an impressive ensemble cast as well, consisting of Skeleton Crew veteran Ryan Kiera Armstrong, along with Merrin Dungey, Sarah Bock, Daniel di Tomasso, and more. It was even thought that the project would begin production sometime this year and possibly even be released before the end of 2027, until now. Sarah Michelle Gellar took to her personal Instagram account in a tragic new post to confirm that Hulu is no longer moving forward with the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot series. She did not cite a reason, or if there were any plans for the show to be shopped around somewhere else. Buffy Summers won’t be slaying any vampires, at least for now.

Where Is the Original ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ Series Streaming?

All 144 episodes of all seven seasons of Buffy the Vampire Slayer are streaming on Hulu in America. It was also thought that Hulu would be the home of the planned sequel series, but this is no longer the case. Even all these years after the show went off the air, Buffy is still one of the most popular teen heroes in the world with a massive following. It’s possible that the show could be shopped around and potentially find a new home on another streamer or network.
