The first season of Wonder Man follows a small-time aspiring Hollywood actor, Simon Williams, who secretly has superpowers. However, Hollywood isn’t particularly eager to accept the enhanced onto its sets and into its productions, meaning he has to keep his powers a secret if he wants to pursue the career he deserves. Trevor Slattery (Ben Kingsley), who first played The Mandarin in Iron Man 3 before later returning as actor Trevor Slattery in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, takes Simon under his wing and helps him learn the ropes of becoming a top-class performer. The first season of Wonder Man was a hit both critically and on the streaming charts, and Marvel has finally decided the show’s fate now, nearly two months removed from the premiere. Marvel has announced that Wonder Man has been renewed for Season 2, with both Abdul-Mateen II and Kingsley set to return, along with creator Destin Daniel Cretton.
What Does This Mean for the Future of the MCU?
Marvel renewing Wonder Man for a second season is proof that the studio is willing to invest in projects that don’t necessarily drive the larger MCU story forward. Wonder Man is clearly disconnected from the larger Marvel universe — most fans aren’t waiting on pins and needles for Simon to show up in Doomsday and help bring the fight to Doctor Doom (Robert Downey Jr.). But, this doesn’t take anything away from Wonder Man being the best Marvel Disney+ show since WandaVision. It proves that Marvel Studios is willing to invest in quality projects that exist on a smaller scale, not just big box office draws.
