Radio Silence is gradually putting the gang back together for their new installment of The Mummy franchise. While the film was made with the splashy announcement that Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz would reteam in the new sequel, we now have our first additional casting announcement for the horror-adventure film, which will lumber into theaters on May 19, 2028.
According to reports, John Hannah will return as Jonathan Carnahan in the as-yet untitled Mummy movie, for which plot and character details are being kept tightly wrapped up. Hannah appeared in all three of the previous Mummy films as Jonathan Carnahan, the brother of heroine Evie (Weisz). The film is a sequel to 1999’s The Mummy and 2001’s The Mummy Returns; the film will ignore 2008’s The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, in which Weisz did not appear and was replaced by Maria Bello. It will be directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, the directing collective known as Radio Silence; they previously resurrected the Scream franchise after launching their own in the form of Ready or Not. They’ve also previously dabbled in Universal horror before, reimagining the classic Dracula’s Daughter as Abigail. The film’s script will be penned by David Coggeshall (Orphan: First Kill).
Who Is Jonathan Carnahan?
The louche, cowardly Jonathan was the mismatched brother of Evelyn, a bookish librarian. He kicked off the events of The Mummy when he steals a map to the ancient city of Hamunaptra from adventurer Rick O’Connell (Fraser). Unfortunately for the would-be treasure hunter, the duo had to break O’Connell out of prison to help them get there, only to accidentally unleash the undead Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo). In the sequel, Jonathan assists (and hinders) the now-married Rick and Evelyn as they attempt to save their son, Alex, from a returned Imhotep before he can resurrect the ancient Scorpion King (Dwayne Johnson). In the now-apocryphal Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, Jonathan has opened a nightclub in Shanghai, and once again finds himself wrapped up in his sister and brother-in-law’s mummy escapades.
British actor Hannah first achieved fame in the rom-com Four Weddings and a Funeral, and subsequently starred in the films Sliding Doors, The Hurricane, and Damaged; he also starred on the TV series Spartacus: Blood and Sand, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency. He recently starred in the Italian series Sandokan.
The Mummy 4 will be released on May 19, 2028.
