‘Liminal’: Yahya Abdul-Mateen II & Vanessa Kirby to Lead Apple TV’s New Sci-Fi Thriller From ‘Babylon 5’ Creator!!

Apple TV may not hold a candle to some of the other big streaming services of the world when it comes to subscriber numbers, but one thing the platform has mastered is delivering great originals. The streamer is responsible for some of the all-time great sci-fi shows, including Severance and Pluribus, both of which have emerged in just the last few years. The streamer also recently premiered a hit sci-fi feature film, The Gorge, which co-stars Anya Taylor-Joy opposite Top Gun: Maverick veteran Miles Teller. The film has spent more than 400 days atop streaming charts, and it’s showing no signs of slowing down. Apple TV, like every platform, is always on the lookout for its next big hit, and it may have found just that in Liminal.

News broke yesterday afternoon that, after several months in the early stages of development, Apple TV has officially given the green light to the sci-fi film, Liminal, to move forward. The film hails from director Louis Leterrier, who recently directed the Alan Ritchson and Jason Statham-led blockbuster, Fast X. Only two names are attached to star in the project at this time, but they’re big ones. Recent Marvel breakouts Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Vanessa Kirby have been tapped for leading roles in the film. Abdul-Mateen II recently headlined the Disney+ series, Wonder Man, which has been renewed for Season 2. Kirby made her MCU debut as Sue Storm in The Fantastic Four: First Steps, and she’ll return later this year in Avengers: Doomsday. Justin Rhodes, who recently penned Terminator: Dark Fate, is writing the script for Liminal. It’s unclear at this time when the project will be released or even when it will begin filming.

What Is Apple TV’s New Sci-Fi Movie ‘Liminal’ About?

Apple TV’s Liminal is based on the graphic novel Telepaths by J. Michael Straczynski, who is also famous for his work on Babylon 5. While plot details about the film are being kept under wraps, if it’s anything like the book, it will be set in an alternate future where 10% of the world’s population gains telepathic abilities due to an electromagnetic pulse. This leads the Boston police department to clash with a new faction born out of those with supernatural abilities. With a strong cast, director, and writer, the film has all the potential to be Apple TV’s next big sci-fi feature film, like The Gorge or Eternity.
