Netflix has several projects in development, but few are as highly anticipated as its upcoming sequel to a beloved ’90s sitcom classic. In late 2025, the streamer announced plans to return audiences to Hillman College with a follow-up to A Different World, the fan-favorite series that spun off from The Cosby Show and ran for six seasons on NBC. Production is already ramping up on what will be a 10-episode first season, and a new casting update has now emerged, and it’s one that longtime fans are sure to appreciate.
Earlier casting announcements made it clear the revival is leaning heavily into nostalgia with intentional efforts to stay true to the spirit of the original. The series is executive produced by Reggie Rock Bythewood and Gina Prince-Bythewood, both of whom were writers on the original show. Meanwhile, Debbie Allen — whose creative influence helped define its legacy — will direct three episodes, including the premiere. On-screen, the sequel is set to feature a major reunion, with several core cast members returning. Original stars Jasmine Guy and Kadeem Hardison are returning to reprise their roles as Whitley and Dwayne, alongside Cree Summer and Darryl M. Bell as Freddie Brooks and Ron Johnson.
Now, according to a new report, the reunion is set to get even bigger, with Dawnn Lewis and Glynn Turman officially joining the cast. Both will reprise their roles as Jaleesa Vinson-Taylor and Colonel Bradford Taylor in guest capacities, bringing back one of the show’s most grounded and memorable relationships. Jaleesa was introduced as the older, more mature student at Hillman who quickly became a fan favorite for her sharp wit, independence, and no-nonsense perspective. She had one of the most satisfying arcs in the series with her eventual romance and marriage to Colonel Taylor, a respected military man and mathematics professor.
The revival is also adding fresh faces to the mix, with Tichina Arnold (The Neighborhood), Joshua Suiter (All’s Fair), and Raven Goodwin (Abbott Elementary) set to appear in guest roles. They join an expanding list of returning original stars, including Charnele Brown as Dr. Kimberly Reese Boyer, Jenifer Lewis as Professor Davenport, and Jada Pinkett Smith as Lena James, turning the sequel series into a full-fledged homecoming that fans will gladly appreciate.
What Is ‘A Different World’s Plot, and When Will It Be Released?
A Different World sequel will once again return viewers to Hillman College, this time focusing on a new generation of students led by Deborah Wayne. The character is the youngest daughter of Whitley Gilbert and Dwayne Wayne and will be portrayed by Maleah Joi Moon, who recently earned a Tony nomination for her breakout performance in Hell’s Kitchen on Broadway. According to the official synopsis, Deborah begins her freshman year at her parents’ HBCU alma mater but struggles to step out of their shadow. As expectations mount, she sets out to carve her own path and make the most of her college experience. She’ll be joined by fresh faces that include Cornell Young, Jordan Aaron Hall, Alijah Kai Higgins, and Kennedi McClure.
Production on the sequel series is expected to wrap soon, with filming initially slated to conclude on April 27. While Netflix has yet to confirm an official premiere date, anticipation continues to build, and fans will likely get their first look at Hillman’s new class before the end of the year. In the meantime, viewers can revisit the original series on Netflix as excitement for the next chapter continues to grow.
