The Housemaid’s Secret will open in wide release on December 17, 2027. Sydney Sweeney will return for the sequel, with Kirsten Dunst joining the cast in a new role. Michele Morrone is also coming back as Enzo, and Paul Feig will return to direct. Lionsgate clearly likes this release strategy, since it’s using the same December corridor that helped the first movie break out in a big way. That plan makes sense. The first Housemaid film opened strong and went on to become a major box office success, earning $125 million domestically and nearly $400 million worldwide. Now Lionsgate’s hoping the sequel can do the same by offering moviegoers a darker, R-rated thriller during the holiday season, when much of the competition is aimed at families.
The new film is based on Freida McFadden’s bestselling novel of the same name. In The Housemaid’s Secret, Millie takes a housekeeping job for a woman she’s never allowed to see. But before long, she learns the truth behind a locked door and finds herself caught up in secrets that may be even darker than her own. It’s a strong setup, and it sounds like the sequel will keep the same twisty, suspenseful energy that made the first story such a hit.
Is ‘The Housemaid’ Worth Watching?
Collider’s review stated that The Housemaid is a frustrating but entertaining thriller that really comes alive in its final stretch. The setup is strong: a young woman takes a live-in maid job with a rich family and slowly realizes something is very wrong inside the house. It taps into the natural tension of letting a stranger into your home, and for a while, that is enough to keep things interesting. Jeff Ewing wrote:
“When things do take a turn (which happens, to be fair, late), it becomes a much better picture. When it’s sexy, violent, or bonkers, it’s a wildly enjoyable romp, and Sweeney kills it any time she’s allowed to dial emotions up to 10 (as fans of Euphoria or Immaculate can attest to). Was it great? For the majority of its runtime, no. Would I watch the sequel it teases? Yes. Inside you are two wolves, and if they’re watching The Housemaid in different parts, the one watching the ending is the happier wolf by far.”
The Housemaid’s Secret will premiere in theaters on December 17, 2027.
