The last four months have been an up-and-down rollercoaster ride for fans of Avatar: The Last Airbender. At the end of last year, Paramount opted that it would forego a theatrical release for its new sequel movie, The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender. The animated film will take place several years after the events of the Season 3 finale, and show the Aang gang now growing up as young adults, navigating the world now that the war with the Fire Nation is over. The sequel movie features a star-studded ensemble cast including Dave Bautista, Ke Huy Quan, Steven Yeun, Taika Waititi, Dee Bradley Baker, Geraldine Viswanathan, and more, and it will be released straight to streaming on Paramount+ on October 9. Steve Ahn, William Mata, and Lauren Montgomery are all co-directing the film.
This blow to Avatar fans was softened when Netflix debuted the first image of Toph from its live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender series, also confirming that the show would return before the end of this year. It’s been over two years since the first season of the live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender series was released on Netflix, and this morning, Netflix has confirmed that all episodes of Season 2 will be released on June 25. The first season of the live-action series adapted the entirety of the first animated season, while also taking some creative liberties when it comes to merging some chapters. It’s all but guaranteed that Season 2 will do the same, loosely sticking to the same story of Avatar: The Last Airbender Book 2: Earth, while also doing some things differently to stand out as a new adaptation. A full synopsis for Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 2 has also been released:
“Avatar: The Last Airbender follows Aang, the young Avatar, as he learns to master the four elements (Water, Earth, Fire, Air) to restore balance to a world threatened by the terrifying Fire Nation. In Season 2, after a bittersweet victory saving the Northern Water Tribe from the invading Fire Nation, Avatar Aang, Katara and Sokka regroup and set off on a mission to convince the elusive Earth King to aid in their battle against fearsome Fire Lord Ozai.”
What Else Happens in the Second Book of ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’?
The second book in Avatar: The Last Airbender picks up not long after the conclusion of the first, as Aang continues his journey to learn waterbending and begins his quest as an earthbender. As a natural airbender, learning earthbending is quite difficult for Aang, but he finds the perfect teacher in Toph, a young earthbender who teaches him that earthbending is much more than moving rocks. Seasons 2 and 3 were filmed back-to-back, so fans can rest assured that the wait between them will be much shorter than the gap between the first and second seasons. The Season 2 cast for Avatar: The Last Airbender consists of Gordon Cormier, Kiawentiio, Ian Ousley, Dallas Liu, Miyako, Elizabeth Yu, Momona Tamada, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, with Maria Zhang and Daniel Dae Kim.
Check out all new episodes of Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 2 on June 25.
