‘Project Hail Mary’ Is Now Getting an AR/VR Game!!

One of the biggest movies of the year is currently flying in theaters. Based on the bestseller by Andy Weir, Project Hail Mary hit the ground running with the biggest opening weekend in Amazon MGM‘s history, overtaking Creed III, cementing itself as one of the defining films of 2026 despite it only being April. Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the movie has stormed to over $420 million worldwide in just three weekends, losing its place at the box office summit to a debuting Super Mario Galaxy Movie.

So great has the initial response to the film been, with many already touting it for Academy Awards success in 2027, that questions are swirling about a potential sequel. It has now been reported that the first of what are expected to be many spin-offs of Project Hail Mary is already in development. Sporting a shiny new, original story from author Andy Weir, the project is officially getting a mixed AR/VR game titled Project Hail Mary: Journey Among the Stars. The game is crafted by developer Maze Theory, the team behind the likes of Peaky Blinders: The King’s Ransom and Doctor Who: The Edge of Time.

But will everyone’s favorite rock-shaped alien named after an iconic mid-’70s sports movie be in the game? The answer is, excitingly, yes, with the player able to build a bond with Rocky “through cooperation, problem-solving, and evolving trust,” according to a report. “It is, as Weir intended, a story about the first true friendship between species, and mixed reality makes that feel real in an entirely new way.” A blurb for the game reads:

“The ship’s systems are failing. Deep space grows increasingly uncertain. Using mixed reality, the Hail Mary itself bleeds into the player’s physical environment. They reach out to diagnose the problem, improvise the fix, and push the limits of what science and engineering can do under pressure. Humanity’s last hope is in the player’s hands.”

In a comment about the game, Weir wrote:

“Since creating Project Hail Mary a few years ago, fans have been waiting for more. This is the first step outside of what happens in the book and movie, something you can only experience in mixed reality.”

Will We Get a ‘Project Hail Mary’ Sequel?

Sure, a video game is exciting, but will the world be treated to an official Project Hail Mary sequel at any point? In a recent interview, Weir answered this most pressing question, saying, “Absolutely, I have ideas for sequels for Project Hail Mary, but I just don’t have a good enough one yet. My next book, the one I’m working on now, is not a sequel to anything that I’ve written.” For those yet to check out this intergalactic tearjerker, the movie is still in theaters.

Project Hail Mary is in theaters now.
