With just over seven months left until The Hunger Games franchise returns to theaters with the prequel, Sunrise on the Reaping, Lionsgate is asking viewers to “remember.” A new video has been released that looks back on the history of the deadly games, from the 10th iteration featuring a young Coriolanus Snow and depicted in The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, to the fateful “76th” competition that never came to be after the death of President Coin. At the very end, however, it flashes back to the days of the 50th games with a preview of what’s to come when a young Haymitch Abernathy (Joseph Zada) competes. Included in the footage from Francis Lawrence‘s latest installment is the first official look at a few characters from the original trilogy, directly compared to their past selves.
Opening on a field set for the coming battle, the segment runs through the returning figures with new faces, starting with Effie Trinket, once played by Elizabeth Banks but now embodied by Elle Fanning. As cast members chime in with one “remember” after another, more glimpses of the past and future appear, including Maya Hawke as Wiress, Jesse Plemons as Plutarch Heavensbee, Kieran Culkin as Caesar Flickerman, Kelvin Harrison Jr. as Beetee Latier, Lili Taylor as Mags Flanagan, and Ralph Fiennes as President Coriolanus Snow. There’s even a shot of Jennifer Garner‘s Katniss Everdeen to tie the entire retrospective together, though it’s also perhaps a nod to the fact that both she and Josh Hutcherson will return for the prequel.
Last but not least is Zada, as the man of the hour, Haymitch. He’s juxtaposed with Woody Harrelson, who iconically played Katniss and Peeta’s mentor in the original trilogy. Sunrise on the Reaping will finally tell his story of conquering the 50th Hunger Games, beginning in Panem on the morning of the reaping, 24 years before Katniss’s story began. Lawrence is directing from a script penned by Billy Ray based on Suzanne Collins‘ latest novel in the series, released last March. It’s set to shine a greater light on the totalitarian world as it existed when Haymitch was forced to compete, and how the games themselves have evolved with time.
Who Else Has Been Selected for ‘The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping’?
Although the cast members featured in the nostalgic Hunger Games retrospective make up a large part of Sunrise on the Reaping‘s Panem, there are still many other big names attached. Rounding out the film are Glenn Close, Mckenna Grace, Billy Porter, Ben Wang, Whitney Peak, and Iris Apatow. For Lawrence, this Hunger Games will be his fourth, after helming Catching Fire, both Mockingjay parts, and The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, and under his watch, the franchise has thrived. The first five installments have accounted for over $3.3 billion at the worldwide box office, turning Collins’ young-adult dystopian series into a cinematic powerhouse. Haymitch’s story will now look to live up to that towering legacy once again and fill in a gap in its history.
The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping premieres in theaters on November 20. Check out the new video in the player above.
