‘Bloodborne’ Is Officially Getting an R-Rated Animated Film Adaptation!!

After 11 long years, Bloodborne is officially back! Sony just announced at CinemaCon 2026 that an R-rated animated feature film based on the widely beloved gothic PlayStation horror game is in the works from Lyrical Animation, with YouTuber personality Seán William McLoughlin (AKA Jacksepticeye) producing the surprise new project. The announcement being at CinemaCon practically confirms the new film will be getting a theatrical release.

A 2015 PlayStation 4 exclusive developed by FromSoftware, the same studio behind legendary titles like Dark Souls, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, and Elden Ring (the latter of which was co-created by George R.R. Martin), Bloodborne takes place in the fantastical Victorian city of Yharnam after an unspeakable tragedy. The once-humble hamlet has now been taken over by a monstrous plague that has transformed much of the town’s population into deranged zombified townsfolk, werewolf-like creatures, and many other horrific monsters that would feel right at home in one of the terrifying tales of H.P. Lovecraft. Players take control of one of the mostly wiped-out Hunters in an attempt to bring some level of order to this post-apocalyptic tragedy in a place where it is impossible to tell who is friend and who is foe.

Bloodborne was a massive critical and financial success for Sony when it debuted, which is why Sony‘s apparent silence on the IP since 2015 has been somewhat curious. Not only has there been no news of a sequel or follow-up since then, but PlayStation has also been silent on a much-requested remaster and/or update of the original game to give it modern graphical fidelity and framerate, which the video game juggernaut has done for other titles like Marvel’s Spider-Man. Almost exactly one year ago, FromSoftware recently unveiled their next new game, The Duskbloods — a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive that fans immediately likened to a Bloodborne spiritual successor due to its Gothic horror feel. What isn’t surprising is Seán William McLoughlin‘s involvement. Not only has the YouTube personality been extremely popular in the gaming community for well over a decade, but his longtime friend and collaborator, Mark Fischbach (AKA Markiplier), recently made history with his own record-breaking video game adaptation, Iron Lung.

Sony Is Betting Big on Video Game Adaptations

After the runaway success of the Sonic, Minecraft, and Mario movies, video game films are now seen as a massive untapped market after years of them being scrutinized for their poor quality, and Bloodborne is just scratching the surface of what Sony has on the way. At CinemaCon, Sony also shared updates on not one, not two, but three other video game adaptations. Firstly, Weapons director Zach Cregger unveiled the first footage of his highly anticipated Resident Evil adaptation, which premieres later this year, promising to be a more horror-centric tribute to the games that moves away from its action-centric predecessors. Also now set to get cameras rolling soon is Jason Momoa‘s Helldivers movie — the sci-fi satire directed by Justin Lin, which will begin filming in a few weeks. Finally, Sony is somewhat surprisingly working with its video game industry competitor, Nintendo, on a live-action Legend of Zelda adaptation, bringing one of the latter video game giant’s crown jewels to the big screen for the first time. As for other video game adaptations Sony is working on, Prime Video is deep into development on a God of War series, and the studio is also continuing work on bringing its sci-fi fantasy series Horizon to life.

Sony‘s Bloodborne movie is in development now.
