For years, Nathan Fillion has remained one of the most reliable faces on network television, while also appearing in a number of film projects. One of his most well-known roles came as Richard Castle in the hit ABC series Castle, which ran for eight seasons from 2009 to 2016. Every episode of Castle is currently available to stream on Hulu and Prime Video, making it easier than ever to revisit one of Fillion’s signature performances. He’s also widely recognized for his ongoing collaborations with James Gunn, first appearing in the Guardians of the Galaxy films and later in The Suicide Squad. He initially portrayed TDK (The Detachable Kid) in Gunn’s first DC movie, but has since been cast as Guy Gardner’s Green Lantern in the upcoming DCU.
The fate of The Rookie has been hanging in the balance for a while now. Season 8 isn’t even over yet, and it won’t be until the first week of May, but most fans expected that ABC would have announced a renewal or cancellation by now. This afternoon, ABC delivered the news that fans had been waiting for, confirming that The Rookie had been renewed for Season 9, with new episodes expected to hit the network before the end of this year. Reports indicate that part of what factored into ABC’s decision to renew The Rookie is the show’s growing audience in the under-18 demographic, which has blossomed in the last year or so thanks to TikTok. The Rookie is now ABC’s third-longest-running drama of all time, behind only Grey’s Anatomy (which is still going strong after 23 seasons) and NYPD Blue (which ran for 12 seasons).
What’s Happening in ‘The Rookie’ Right Now?
Tonight’s episode of The Rookie will see the team work together after Nolan and Celina discover a possible suicide that spirals into a much larger conspiracy. In the last episode, a troubling incident at a school drew the team into a complex case, while Celina’s temporary missing persons assignment led her into a dangerous situation from which she narrowly escaped. The Rookie was written and created for TV by Alexi Hawley, who is also developing a new North spin-off set in Boston.
