‘Man of Tomorrow’: First BTS Image Confirms James Gunn’s Next DCU Feature Has Officially Begun Filming!! Check It Out!!

The next movie in the DC Universe is taking flight next year, and its origin story is now in progress. Director James Gunn commemorated the first day of filming with a social media post that included a few tantalizing hints about the movie. The new film, which continues the saga of Superman, will hit theaters on July 9, 2027.

As filming on Man of Tomorrow kicks off, Gunn‘s Instagram post prominently features a nametag for “Luthor, A.” from Van Kull Prison, the supermax correctional institute Alexander “Lex” Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) was hauled off to at the end of Superman, and where audiences saw him in the second season of the HBO Max series Peacemaker. Also prominently featured is a chess set; Luthor, like many evil geniuses, is an avowed fan of the game, and even escaped prison with a hologram of himself and henchman Otis playing it in Superman II. Further off in the distance is the clapboard for the film, which displays its logo for the first time; it merges the familiar Superman S-shield with the logo for the alien super villain Brainiac, which is a trio of circles arranged in a V-pattern. Does the open bag of Ruffles potato chips also have something to do with the plot, or was someone just hungry? You’ll have to find out next summer, when Man of Tomorrow hits theaters.

What Do We Know About ‘Man of Tomorrow’?

So far, we only know the basics: Luthor and his loathed archnemesis, Superman (David Corenswet), will temporarily put aside their differences to save the Earth from the alien mega-menace Brainiac (Lars Eidinger). A number of characters will return from Superman, including Justice Gang members Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion), Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced), and Mr. Terrific (Edi Gathegi), and supporting characters Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan), Jimmy Olsen (Skyler Gisondo), and Eve Teschmacher (Sara Sampaio). New to the big screen, but not the DC Universe, is John Stewart (Aaron Pierre); a member of the Green Lantern Corps like Gardner, Stewart will make his debut in HBO Max‘s Lanterns this spring. Adria Arjona is also joining the cast; she will allegedly play the alien warrior Maxima, although rumors have swirled that she may be playing a more prominent character.

Man of Tomorrow is written and directed by Gunn. He has claimed that the film, while a follow-up to Superman, is not a sequel, and that it is as much a Lex Luthor film as it is a Superman film.

Man of Tomorrow is now in production, and will be released on July 9, 2027.
