‘Top Gun’ Movies Officially Return to Theaters Next Month!!

When Tom Cruise decides to stop making movies, it will be one of the saddest days in Hollywood history. For more than 40 years now, Cruise has put his body on the line to deliver some of the most entertaining movies of all time, and while he still doesn’t have an Oscar to show for his work, that may all change later this year with the release of Digger. The film will be released in theaters later this year on October 2, and it will be the first time in almost 10 years that Cruise has starred in an original movie, playing a role he’s never played before. Fresh off the success of his last two Mission: Impossible movies, Digger can safely be considered one of the most anticipated movies of the year.

Before he starred in the final pair of Mission: Impossible movies in 2023 and 2025, though, Cruise starred in the most successful movie of his career in Top Gun: Maverick. 35 years in the making, the film saw Cruise return to his signature role as Pete Mitchell, whom he first played in the 1986 blockbuster Top Gun, which was directed by the late Tony Scott. Top Gun: Maverick grossed $1.5 billion at the box office back during its initial run in 2022, but to the surprise of fans around the world, the film will have a chance to add to this total soon. Tom Cruise took to his personal social media both on Instagram and X to announce that both Top Gun and Top Gun: Maverick will return to theaters next month on May 13 to celebrate the first film’s 40th anniversary. We can’t believe it’s been that long, either.

What Happens In ‘Top Gun: Maverick’?

Top Gun: Maverick picks up years after the events of Top Gun, with Pete Mitchell called back to Top Gun to teach a new generation of recruits to fly a dangerous mission. Peter Craig and Justin Marks came up with the story for Top Gun: Maverick, with Christopher McQuarrie, Eric Warren Singer, and Ehren Kruger all writing the script, and Joseph Kosinski directed the film. Surrounding Cruise in the Top Gun: Maverick ensemble are Jennifer Connelly as Penny, Miles Teller as Rooster, Glen Powell as Hangman, the late Val Kilmer as Iceman, Jon Hamm as Cyclone, Charles Parnell as Warlock, Monica Barbaro as Phoenix, Lewis Pullman as Bob, Jay Ellis as Payback, and Danny Ramirez as Fanboy.
