When James Gunn took creative control of DC several years ago, there were plenty of heroes he could have chosen to start his universe with. Gunn had a history of taking lesser-known comic book characters like the Guardians of the Galaxy and turning them into global sensations, so it wouldn’t have been surprising to see him start with a lower tier of DC character. While he did launch his new universe with some B-roll characters in Creature Commandos, he stuck with DC’s golden boy, Superman, to kick off the feature film side of the DCU. The film was a critical and commercial success, and Gunn will continue his work with the Super family this summer with Supergirl, which stars Milly Alcock, who was first introduced opposite David Corenswet last year.
Superman can be safely considered in the upper echelon of comic book characters who are vastly more popular than the other figures featured alongside them in panels, movies, and TV shows. Joining Superman in this higher tier of comic book notoriety are other DC characters like Batman and even Marvel characters like Spider-Man and Wolverine. One of the most underrated Superman projects to emerge in the last few years has been My Adventures with Superman, the HBO Max original animated series starring Jack Quaid (Hughie from The Boys) as the voice of the titular character. My Adventures with Superman aired for two seasons in 2023 and 2024, but the show has been on hiatus for nearly two years now. However, news broke this morning that My Adventures with Superman Season 3 will return to HBO Max on June 13 for a new story that will focus on Reign of Supermen.
What Do We Know About James Gunn’s Next Superman Movie?
James Gunn’s official Superman sequel, which has been titled Man of Tomorrow, will be released in theaters around the world on July 9, 2027. Man of Tomorrow is now in production, and it will see the return of both David Corenswet as Superman and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. The duo will be forced to team up to take down a grave threat in Brainiac, who will be played by Lars Eidinger. Aaron Pierre, who will star as John Stewart in this summer’s Lanterns, will also have a role in Man of Tomorrow.
