Netflix has ordered a new straight-to-series drama with Claire Danes attached to star in the lead role. The project hails from Sarah Treem, the co-creator and showrunner of Showtime’s Golden Globe-winning drama The Affair.
Claire Danes to headline Netflix’s Lovesick
Danes will play Annika, a renowned breast cancer surgeon whose professional and personal world changes dramatically after she receives her own cancer diagnosis. The series follows two people whose lives unexpectedly intertwine: Annika and her new patient, Nate, a promising politician. The story explores their connection while Annika simultaneously undergoes breast cancer treatment. Themes include love, sex, illness, death, family, children, health, medicine, and the meaning of life.
Treem created, wrote, and is one of the executive producers on Lovesick. The series is based on the Keshet original series by Rona Tamir, Tal Granit, and Sharon Maymon for Keshet 12. Treem shared her enthusiasm about the collaboration with Claire Danes. “I’m thrilled to get to tell this story with the genius Claire Danes,” Treem quipped to streamer. “We’ve been looking for something to do together for a very long time, and this character, Annika, is perhaps a mix of both of our wildest dreams.”
The Affair’s showrunner also addressed the personal resonance of the material. “To get to tell a story about all the things keeping me up at night anyway — life, death, children, love, middle age, courage, science and faith — is an extraordinary opportunity I don’t take lightly in these turbulent times,” she added.
Danes is currently the only confirmed cast member. She will executive produce alongside Keshet Studios’ Avi Nir, Keren Shahar, and Peter Traugott. Additional casting announcements remain forthcoming. Lovesick continues her relationship with Netflix. She starred opposite Matthew Rhys in the streamer’s 2025 limited series The Beast in Me, which got her a Golden Globe nomination. The show also received a nomination for best limited series.
Netflix has not yet announced a release date for Lovesick.
