While Disney‘s output of live-action remakes of its animated classics may have slowed, the production of one continues apace. That movie, which will reimagine one of the studio’s more recent efforts, has just added a big name, in the form of Golden Globe nominee Diego Luna. The Andor star is staying in the Disney family for the time being.
According to reports, Luna has joined the cast of the upcoming live-action Tangled remake. However, don’t rack your memory to figure out what character from the 2010 film he’ll be playing; he’s starring in a role newly created for the live-action film. It’s the latest project for the ever-busy Luna. A Mouthful of Ash, which he directed and wrote, is set to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival later this month, and México 86, a film about Mexico’s improbably winning bid to host the 1986 World Cup, will debut on Netflix just in time for this year’s World Cup this summer. He’s also starring alongside Taylor Kitsch and Jason Isaacs in Eleven Days, a prison riot thriller based on actual events.
What Do We Know About the ‘Tangled’ Remake?
Teagan Croft (Titans) will star as isolated, long-haired princess Rapunzel in the film, opposite Milo Manheim (Zombies), who will play roguish outlaw Flynn Rider. Kathryn Hahn (Agatha All Along) will play manipulative villainess Mother Gothel. Like the original, the film will center around the naive Rapunzel, who has been kept an unwitting prisoner by Gothel; Gothel is secretly using Rapunzel’s magic-infused hair to maintain her own youth and vitality. She gets her chance to escape when she encounters would-be thief Flynn, anf the two embark on a wild adventure. The film will be directed by Michael Gracey (The Greatest Showman, Better Man), while the script will be penned by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (I Know What You Did Last Summer) and Michael Montemayor (Stepsisters). No release date has yet been announced for the film, but it will begin production next month in Spain.
A reimagining of Rapunzel, one of the Brothers Grimm‘s fairy tales, the original Tangled was directed by Nathan Greno and Byron Howard, written by Dan Fogelman (with songs by Disney stalwart Alan Menken), and starred the voices of Mandy Moore, Zachary Levi, and Donna Murphy. It grossed $592 million USD and earned glowing reviews.
The Tangled live-action remake is set to begin production in Spain in June; no release date has yet been announced.
