James Gunn’s DCU launches back into action thriller summer with the release of the highly-anticipated Supergirl, starring Milly Alcock as the titular Kara Zor-El. Alcock made her debut as the character last year in Superman, the David Corenswet-starring film that grossed over $600 million at the worldwide box office. The DCU also has another big project coming to HBO Max this summer with Lanterns, the Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre-starring show that’s been set for premiere on August 16. The DCU will close out the year with Clayface, the body horror film written by Mike Flanagan and directed by James Watkins, launching this October. DC fans had a rough go at things for years while the company was under different creative leadership, but there seems to be some real direction now that James Gunn has taken control.
When Superman was such a hit, it didn’t take fans long to begin asking about what was next for the DCU’s central hero. While Gunn has confirmed that Corenswet’s Kal-El will have a role in Supergirl this summer, along with Jason Momoa as Lobo, he does have bigger plans for the character to return to the big screen. Gunn cast both Corenswet and Lex Luthor actor Nicholas Hoult to star in his Superman follow-up, Man of Tomorrow, which is coming to theaters on July 9, 2027. The film is now in production, and it was even reported that Lanterns star Aaron Pierre will have a role in the film. This afternoon, news broke that Man of Tomorrow is further building out its ensemble with Matthew Lillard, the Scream veteran who recently featured in the second season of Daredevil: Born Again. It’s unclear at this time who he will play in the Superman sequel.
What Else Do We Know About the ‘Superman’ Sequel, ‘Man of Tomorrow’?
Aside from Corenswet, Hoult, and Lillard, Man of Tomorrow will also return DCU veterans like Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr. Newcomers to the cast include Lars Eidinger, who has been cast as the titular villain Brainiac, and Adria Arjona, who will play Maxima. Plot details about Man of Tomorrow are being kept under wraps, but it’s confirmed to follow Superman and Lex Luthor reluctantly teaming up to take down Brainiac.
