‘Hold on to Your Angels’: ‘Hamnet’ Stars Jessie Buckley & Paul Mescal to Reunite for New Crime Romance!!

Without a doubt one of the best movies of 2025 is Chloé Zhao‘s Hamnet, which told the powerful and heartbreaking story of how William Shakespeare was inspired by a family tragedy to write arguably his most influential play, Hamlet, though it’s mostly about his wife’s handling of that said tragedy. The movie was widely praised for the performances of its two stars, Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal, whose chemistry with each other was nothing short of electric. Buckley herself even took home an Academy Award for her portrayal of Agnes, and while Mescal was controversially snubbed, it appears that the two are gonna get another chance at Oscar gold with a brand-new project.

According to a new report, Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal are officially set to reunite for a new romantic crime movie titled Hold on to Your Angels, with Beasts of the Southern Wild filmmaker Benh Zeitlin attached to direct. Plan B is already attached to produce alongside Anora producer Alex Coco, and the film plans to find a distributor at the imminent Cannes Film Festival. Filming on the project is also expected to begin in February 2027.

The intitial report also includes several plot details for the upcoming project, which is set to take place in Southern Louisiana. The official synopsis reads as follows:

“Follows a hell-bound outlaw (Mescal) and a ferocious shepherd of lost souls (Buckley) who fall in catastrophic love as their crumbling bayou paradise drags them under.”

Buckley and Mescal have made a name for themselves in recent years for both acclaimed indie projects and high-profile IP movies. Hamnet also wasn’t the first time the two stars have worked together on the same movie, having previously worked on Maggie Gyllenhaal‘s directorial debut, The Lost Daughter. Funnily enough, shortly after winning her Oscar for Hamnet, Buckley starred alongside Christian Bale for another Bonnie & Clyde-type adventure with The Bride! — Maggie Gyllenhaal‘s divisive and ambitious reimagining of Frankenstein. As for Mescal, in addition to starring in hit films like Aftersun, he also led Ridley Scott‘s long-awaited epic sequel, Gladiator II.

What’s Next for Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal?

Hold on to Your Angels is far from the only project currently in development for both Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal. Buckley is expected to next be seen in the salaciously titled drama, Three Incestuous Sisters, alongside Dakota Johnson, Saoirse Ronan, Josh O’Connor, and Isabella Rossellini. Mescal’s next big project is Sam Mendes‘ highly anticipated quadrilogy following each member of the legendary rock band, The Beatles. Mescal will play Paul McCartney alongside Harris Dickinson as John Lennon, Joseph Quinn as Geoge Harrison, and Barry Keoghan as Ringo Starr.
