‘The Nest’: Gerard Butler Set to Lead New Action Thriller!!

2026 hasn’t exactly been an ideal year so far for Gerard Butler, who returned to his role as John Garrity in the long-awaited sci-fi sequel, Greenland 2: Migration. Box office analysts predicted that the film was in danger when it was revealed to carry a $90 million budget, and they were right. Greenland 2, which also stars Deadpool and Sheriff Country veteran Morena Baccarin, whimpered out of theaters after grossing only $44 million at the global box office — half its budget and only a fourth of its estimated break-even point. Butler fans were treated to some good news not long ago when it was reported that his years-spanning crime thriller, In The Hand of Dante, had finally been acquired by Netflix to release on streaming later this year.

However, Butler isn’t going to let a slow start to 2026 keep him from picking up new roles. This afternoon, news broke that Butler has been tapped to star in a new action thriller, The Nest, which is being brought to Cannes Market by Thunder Road and Black Bear. Aaron Benjamin wrote the script for The Nest, with Butler serving as a producer along with Basil Iwanyk, Erica Lee, Alan Siegel, Steve Klinsky, Jon Hersh, and Mahal Sourgose. Production on the film is currently scheduled to begin in early 2027, but it still does not have a release date or a director attached. Real military operatives gave input on the script for The Nest, and the film will see Butler play a high-level military sniper who must save his family and 70,000 fans from a ticking clock at a World Cup match.

What Else Is Gerard Butler Working On?

Butler is also hard at work right now filming the second installment in his hit fantasy series, How to Train Your Dragon. The first feature debuted last summer, and it was a success by every metric, earning strong scores from critics and audiences on Rotten Tomatoes and grossing over $630 million at the worldwide box office. It’s now Gerard Butler’s highest-grossing movie, and the live-action sequel, which is coming to theaters on June 11, 2027, courtesy of Universal Pictures, has all the potential to be an even bigger hit than its predecessor. Butler is also due to begin shooting his third Den of Thieves movie with O’Shea Jackson Jr. soon, and the film will likely be released sometime next year, possibly even in 2028.
