Amazon’s Prime Video has officially ordered a Fourth Wing television series, Variety reported on Monday.
Michael B. Jordan announced the series pickup at Amazon’s upfront presentation at the Beacon Theatre. Jordan serves as executive producer on the project through his Outlier Society production company.
The series adapts Rebecca Yarros’ bestselling Empyrean romantasy book series. The story follows twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail at the brutal Basgiath War College. Her mother, a military general, orders her to join candidates striving to become elite dragon riders.
Yarros’ book series began with Fourth Wing in May 2023 as a New York Times bestseller. Iron Flame followed in November 2023, and Onyx Storm was released in January 2025. The titles and release dates for the planned fourth and fifth books remain unannounced.
Lisa Joy, co-creator of HBO’s Westworld, will direct the first episode and executive produce. Meredith Averill, who co-created Netflix’s Locke & Key, joins as showrunner. Averill replaced original showrunner Moira Walley-Beckett, who exited the project after joining in summer 2024. The series was first put into development in October 2023, but stalled until Averill’s arrival last September.
Additional executive producers include Outlier president Elizabeth Raposo, Jonathan Nolan, and Athena Wickham of Kilter Films. Liz Pelletier and Sherryl Clark executive produce for Premeditated Productions. Outlier Society executive vice president of TV Stefano Agosto will co-executive produce. It remains unclear whether Jordan will play any character in the series.
“I’m thrilled to be working with this dedicated, experienced team and grateful for their passion for both the books and the readership behind them,” Yarros said. Peter Friedlander, Head of Global Television at Amazon MGM Studios, called the series “one of the most anticipated adaptations in the world.”
