‘The Roman’: Oscar Isaac led Netflix Crime Thriller Gets a Title; Adds Alec Baldwin, Betty Gilpin & More!!

Oscar Isaac‘s new Las Vegas-set drama has a title and a supporting cast. Alec Baldwin, no stranger to on-screen casino skulduggery himself, is one of three major additions to the Martin Scorsese-produced series. The series is in development at Netflix.

According to reports, the series, which stars Isaac as casino head Robert “Bobby Red” Redman, will be titled The Roman; presumably, that’s the name of the Vegas casino and resort that will serve as the backdrop for the series. Baldwin will co-star as Paul “Primo” Clark, the longtime chairman of the casino and a surrogate father figure to Bobby; it recalls Baldwin‘s work as a ruthless casino manager in the 2003 crime drama The Cooler, which netted him a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination. Joining him is Betty Gilpin as Marla Blake, an accomplished lawyer and Bobby’s wife; she’s just as adept at navigating the back alleyways of Sin City as her husband. And rounding out the cast is David Costabile as Bill Saverick, the operator of a rival casino and Bobby’s longtime friend, whose loyalty is about to be sorely tested.

Who Are the New Stars of ‘The Roman’?

Baldwin is a veteran star, with leading and supporting roles in films like Beetlejuice, The Hunt for Red October, Glengarry Glen Ross, The Departed, and the Mission: Impossible franchise. He is also an Emmy-winner for his portrayal of NBC executive Jack Donaghy on 30 Rock, and more recently, for spoofing Donald Trump on Saturday Night Live. He’s recently been in the news for a tragic accident on the set of the Western Rust that killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins; exonerated at trial, Baldwin now faces a civil trial from Hutchins‘ survivors. Gilpin is a veteran of a number of Netflix projects, including the wrestling dramedy GLOW, the historical miniseries Death by Lightning, and the Western American Primeval. She is next slated to star alongside Ethan Hawke in the upcoming second season of The Lowdown on Hulu. Veteran character actor Costabile frequently plays underhanded or hapless characters; he’s best known as newspaper editor Thomas Klebanow on The Wire, doomed chemist Gale Boetticher on Breaking Bad, and the vice-addicted Mike “Wags” Wagner on Billions.

The Roman will be written, showrun, and executive produced by Billions co-creators Brian Koppelman and David Levien. Isaac will executive produce via Mad Gene; Scorsese and Sikelia Productions also executive produce with Julie Yorn and Rick Yorn for Expanded Media, Paul Schiff, and Beth Schacter. Kerry Orent will co-executive produce. JC Chandor, who directed Isaac in Triple Frontier and A Most Violent Year, will direct and executive produce.

The Roman is in development at Netflix; no release date has yet been announced.
