With The Devil Wears Prada 2 in theaters now, and a third The Princess Diaries movie in the works, Anne Hathaway isn’t finished revisiting her filmography. She’s set to take on a key behind-the-scenes role in a new series that will reimagine one of her first movie roles. Although the original film wasn’t a success, it’s gone on to become a cult classic.
According to reports, a reboot of Ella Enchanted is in the works at Disney+. The 2004 film was based on the 1997 Gail Carson Levine novel of the same name, and centers around Ella of Frell, a princess who is cursed to obey any command she is given. While the original novel has a brief section that deals with Ella’s time at school, it was not the main focus of the book; however, a la Netflix‘s successful Wednesday series, the upcoming Disney+ series will be primarily set at a boarding school. Hathaway, who starred as Ella in the film, will executive produce the series; it will be written by Ilana Wolpert (Anyone But You), with Beth Schwartz (Dead Boy Detectives) set to showrun.
What Is ‘Ella Enchanted’ About?
Hathaway stars as Ella of Frell, a princess who is given the “gift” of obedience at birth by her obnoxious fairy godmother, Lucinda (Vivica A. Fox). Mistreated by her cruel stepmother (Joanna Lumley) and her unpleasant stepsisters (Lucy Punch and Jennifer Higham), she meets a handsome prince, Char (Hugh Dancy), and sets out to find Lucinda so she can reverse her curse. Along the way, however, they’re bedeviled by Char’s evil uncle (Cary Elwes), who murdered Char’s father and now cruelly rules the realm as King Regent. Directed by Tommy O’Haver (Get Over It), the film loosely adapted the novel; it was a financial and critical disappointment, but has since gained a devoted audience. The movie was released by Miramax, which was at the time owned by Disney; Paramount now has the controlling interest in the company.
Ella Enchanted is only the latest project from the ever-busy Hathaway, who has already seen two of her films, Mother Mary and the aforementioned The Devil Wears Prada 2. This summer, she’ll play the ever-faithful Penelope in The Odyssey, and as a suburban mother trapped in a prehistoric nightmare in The End of Oak Street. Later, in the fall, she’ll star as a troubled author alongside Dakota Johnson in Colleen Hoover‘s Verity.
