Bette Midler cast as Fairy Godmother in Amanda Seyfried’s Cinderella movie Steps
Netflix has confirmed that the Hocus Pocus star will voice the Fairy Godmother in Steps, the upcoming animated Cinderella reimagining starring Amanda Seyfried.
The streaming giant also released the first official images from the movie. They offer the first glimpse at Midler’s version of the iconic character.
The animated feature takes a different approach to the classic Cinderella story by shifting attention toward the stepsisters. The story begins after Lilith grows frustrated living in Cinderella’s shadow. To change her own fate, she steals the Fairy Godmother’s magical wand ahead of the Royal Ball in an attempt. Alongside her sister Margot, Lilith takes over the event and eventually puts the kingdom in danger after a villain named Priscilla seizes power.
According to the official synopsis, “Now, Lilith must team up with Cinderella (Amanda Seyfried) to fight biker trolls, outrun evil henchmen, and escape the Screaming Woods on an epic quest to save the kingdom, but most importantly, their relationship.” Ali Wong voices Lilith, while Stephanie Hsu stars as Margot. Meanwhile, Seyfried lends her voice to Cinderella.
Talking about her role, Bette Midler said, “The beloved Fairy Godmother, the wholesome Fairy Godmother, the one with all the good intentions, has been around for a long, long time. This particular version of the Fairy Godmother has good intentions, but she’s a little bit of a bumbler, and she’s a little bit of a schemer.”
Steps is directed by Alyce Tzue and John Ripa, with Amy Poehler, Jane Hartwell, and Kim Lessing attached as producers. The project is part of Netflix’s growing animated slate, which includes titles such as KPop Demon Hunters and Pinocchio. Steps is scheduled to premiere later this year.
