Since his inception in 1939, Batman has increasingly been defined by the company he keeps. The Bat-Family has, at times, grown quite large in DC’s canon, though the core members tend to remain the same, such as Tim Drake, Dick Grayson, Barbara Gordon, and Damian Wayne, among others. The current mainline comic run for the Caped Crusader that began in 2025 has, similarly, kept those relationships at the forefront, finding new ways to explore the bonds that Bruce Wayne holds dear. Yet, no character has seen a shake-up in this era quite like his ever-loyal butler, Alfred Pennyworth, who’s been in Batman’s life since 1943, has remained his most loyal companion, and even got his own show.

Batman Volume #4 sees Eisner Award-winning writer Matt Fraction continue the modern storyline for Bruce, in which Alfred was killed by Bane back in an issue of Volume #3 released in 2019 under Tom King. The butler has only lived on as a hallucination in Batman’s head, still offering sagely advice, but unable to help any other members of the Bat-Family. He still fills the role of a steadying presence in the vigilante’s life, though his absence is felt, and one that Bruce has had to spend time processing over the course of Fraction’s run. That hole is about to be filled, however, as Issue #12 will finally do the unthinkable and replace the beloved butler with a new addition to the family.

Two new covers for the upcoming comic have been revealed, teasing Alfred’s “gift from beyond the grave.” Created by artists Jorge Jiménez and Dustin Nguyen, these pieces show a younger blonde woman in a suit who appears to be taking over Alfred’s duties at his behest, and it couldn’t come at a better time. This issue’s story will see Batman and his allies dealing with six highly-skilled assassins who have arrived in Gotham City at the same time, with no word on who hired them. Thus begins a race against time for the world’s greatest detective to find out who’s responsible, but the latest member of the Bat-Family is set up as the trump card he desperately needs. While there’s no confirmation of who the character is, Alfred has been known to have both a daughter and a niece in past comics, Daphne Pennyworth and Julia Remarque, who seem like strong candidates.

What’s Next for Alfred On-Screen?

Outside of the comics, Alfred is very much alive and well and is expected to be back in theaters in about a year and a half. Andy Serkis played the most recent live-action cinematic interpretation of the character in Matt Reeves‘ The Batman, which he’ll almost certainly reprise for The Batman Part II next year on October 1. In a recent interview with Collider‘s Steve Weintraub for his Animal Farm adaptation, the actor shared that his busy schedule, also including The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, shouldn’t keep him away from returning to Wayne Manor with Robert Pattinson. “I’m pretty certain it’s all going to work out,” he said. “Yeah, we’re working on it, but I think it’s all looking good.” Serkis has previously been vocal about wanting to lean further into Alfred’s paternal side if he returns, given how the character raised a young Bruce in the absence of his parents and has always looked out for him

Batman Vol. 4, Issue #12 is set to release on August 5.
