BritBox has cemented itself as the home for North American audiences looking to partake in classic British mysteries, especially those based on the many works of the Queen of Crime, Agatha Christie. In addition to hosting older adaptations of the author’s stories, the streamer has been slowly building out a catalog of originals that bring to life some of her overlooked stories compared to the giants like Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple. Last year saw the release of the starry Towards Zero, led by Anjelica Huston, but the platform has also delivered an acclaimed take on Murder Is Easy starring Alien: Romulus breakout David Jonsson and Why Didn’t They Ask Evans?, featuring Will Poulter. Now, Christie‘s beloved crime-solving couple is officially coming back on the case under the BritBox banner.
The first trailer for the previously announced miniseries reimagining of Tommy & Tuppence has officially been released, whisking the private detectives into the modern day with Josh Dylan and Antonia Thomas as the leads. It teases a more chaotic, humorous six-part mystery show following the young duo as they fall in love, fall back out of it, and encounter one interesting case after another along the way. This will be the first time the story has ever been given a contemporary English-language setting, with previous adaptations, like the 1983 series Agatha Christie’s Partners in Crime and its 2015 update. Alongside the first look at the two in action, BritBox further confirmed that they’ll make their debut on the platform on September 15 in the U.S. and Canada.
The dynamic between Dylan and Thomas’ titular sleuths is on full display from the start of the trailer, as Tuppence awakens screaming from a nightmare, which causes Tommy, who’s standing right over her, to also start screaming. They’re more on the amateur side of the private detective world, deciding to give crime-solving a try when they find themselves questioning murder cases together. Although they’re thrust into dealing with killers on the loose, people flying out of buildings to their deaths, and blood-splattered crime scenes, Tommy and Tuppence quickly realize that they might actually be good at this. Guiding them along the way and listening to their dramatic stories is Imelda Staunton, who also serves to keep them in check. They’re always right there to cover for each other, though, showing quite a bit of chemistry, even if they’re described as “(Ex) partners in crime.”
Who Is Behind the Return of ‘Tommy & Tuppence’?
Tommy & Tuppence go way back in Christie‘s catalog, first appearing in her second published detective novel, The Secret Adversary. They’ve appeared in a total of five books, spanning four longer stories and a short story collection, giving plenty of material for BritBox‘s series to pull from. Phoebe Eclair-Powell, who previously penned episodes for Paramount+‘s The Road Trip and Peacock‘s All Her Fault, wrote this adaptation and executive produced in what marks her first-ever dramatic series commission for television. Joining her are Fergus O’Brien and Ellie Heydon, who directed the first four and last two episodes, respectively, while Miss Austen‘s Stella Merz produced. Rounding out the cast are Nicholas Richardson, Charlie Condou, Callie Cooke, and Chizzy Akudolu.
Tommy & Tuppence premieres on BritBox on September 15. Check out the trailer in the player above.
