‘Widow’s Bay’ Renewed for Season 2!!

Widow’s Bay has been the surprise TV hit of the spring. The New England-set horror comedy has alternately tickled and terrified Apple TV viewers over the course of its first nine episodes. Now, with the season finale looming over next week like an ominous fog bank, one question has been on every fan’s mind: will Widow’s Bay return?

Widow’s Bay, as it turns out, is definitely not cursed, because it has officially been renewed for a second season. Apple TV announced the renewal with a video depicting Widow’s Bay mayor Tom Loftis (Matthew Rhys) handing a note to town employee Dale (Jeff Hiller), cancelling the town’s fireworks display: it’s a scene from episode 5, “What to Expect on Your Trip,” but when we see the content of the note, it reveals that the show will, indeed, return for a sophomore season.

It’s no surprise, given the critical acclaim the show has received; it currently holds a 97% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. In her review, Collider‘s Emily Bernard called it “the most daring, weirdest show on Apple TV,” which is no small feat, considering the network also houses mind-boggling hits like Silo, Severance, and Pluribus. The series’ popularity has even renewed interest in Rhys‘ previous series, the Cold War spy thriller The Americans.

What Is ‘Widow’s Bay’ About?

Set in the fictional New England island town of the same name, Widow’s Bay centers around town mayor Tom Loftis (Rhys) and his attempts to promote tourism to the isolated hamlet, which he believes could be “the next Martha’s Vineyard.” However, his attempts seem to dredge up the sinister curse that has unleashed all manner of supernatural evil upon the town over the years; everything from sea hags to masked slashers to the town’s own undead founder. Assisting him in this task, more or less, are his intrepid assistant Patricia (Kate O’Flynn), town sheriff Bechir Clemmons (Kevin Carroll), cantankerous town employee Rosemary (Dale Dickey), local coot Wyck Crawford (Stephen Root), and Loftis’ sullen son, Evan (Kingston Rumi Southwick).

Widow’s Bay is created and executive-produced by Katie Dippold (The Heat), who now has a new overall deal with Apple. It is also executive-produced by Hiro Murai (Atlanta), who directed five of its ten episodes, including the premiere and finale.
