‘Get Jiro’: Titus Welliver Joins Animated Series Adaptation of DC/Vertigo Comic!!

Titus Welliver could navigate a crime story with his eyes closed at this point, but he might have his work cut out with his latest project because it’s operating on a whole new level of madness. After years of Bosching his way around television, Welliver hung up his LAPD badge and private investigator’s license to take on a new role. But this one’s a lot more colorful than anybody will be used to.

Welliver has officially joined the cast of Get Jiro, Adult Swim’s upcoming 10-episode animated series based on the DC and Vertigo graphic novel of the same name. The series is expected to debut later this year, though a specific release date has not yet been announced. Based on the New York Times bestselling comic created by the late Anthony Bourdain and Joel Rose, with artwork by Langdon Foss and Alé Garza, Get Jiro is set in a near-future version of Los Angeles where master chefs rule the city like crime lords. Oh goodness, imagine Gordon Ramsay ruling a city like the Kingpin?

What Is ‘Jiro’ About?

The story follows Jiro, a mysterious sushi chef who arrives in the middle of a bloody culinary war between rival factions. On one side, there are the Internationalists, who try to blend global cuisine into extravagant creations, while the Vertical Farm focuses on organic, vegetarian, macrobiotic food. Naturally, both want Jiro on their side, and obviously, he doesn’t fancy that at all.

Welliver is no stranger to comic book adaptations, with previous credits including Batman: The Long Halloween, Titans, and Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Still, Get Jiro sounds like a particularly unhinged next step. Like Hell’s Kitchen but with actual gang warfare rather than red vs. blue. The series also stars Brian Tee (Chicago Med) as Jiro, Justin Kirk (Weeds), and Alison Pill (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World). Series creator Alessandro Tanaka teased the show’s violent food-world chaos, saying:

They’re like gangsters as they take each other out. The comic starts where this mysterious Japanese sushi chef (Jiro) lands in Los Angeles, and he starts playing everyone against each other. As the series continues, we see that there’s a whole method to his madness, and the entire thing is like him creating a recipe for the grand finale. A lot of food, mayhem and violence happens.”

Get Jiro will premiere on Adult Swim later this year.
