Glen Powell is already having another big year on the big screen, leading the buzzy A24 modern reimagining of Kind Hearts and Coronets titled How to Make a Killing and taking flight in an Arwing as Fox McCloud for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. In general, the Top Gun: Maverick breakout star hasn’t lacked for work over the past half-decade. Although his appearance in Tom Cruise‘s high-flying blockbuster sequel helped launch him into superstardom, 2023 was his true breakthrough year, leading the massively successful rom-com Anyone But You with Sydney Sweeney and headlining Richard Linklater‘s festival darling Hit Man with Adria Arjona, which came to Netflix in 2024. Now, one of those two projects is getting an expansion.
Per a new report, Powell and Linklater have reunited with Netflix to executive produce a series inspired by their action comedy. The streamer is currently developing the title, with You’re the Worst creator Stephen Falk writing in place of the star and director duo. No details about the Hit Man series or who will be starring are available at this time, but it’s expected to stick close to the story of fake professional killer and master of disguise Gary Johnson. Powell‘s BarnStorm Productions is backing the project in partnership with AGC Television, whose parent banner was also behind the acclaimed film.
Part neo-noir, part rom-com actioner, Hit Man is inspired by a true 2001 story from Texas Monthly by writer Skip Hollandsworth, following a strait-laced college professor going undercover for the Houston police to catch clients looking to place a hit. Powell’s Johnson, however, works for the New Orleans Police Department, donning an array of disguises and charming personalities to persuade prospective suspects into placing a hit. Things get morally complicated when he gets involved with a young woman named Madison (Arjona) who is seeking to have her abusive husband killed. They begin a steamy affair of play-acting and deception, the stakes ever-escalating as Gary tries to find a way out for the both of them. In addition to being beloved by critics and audiences, it made an impression on Netflix‘s charts and earned a bit of awards recognition, including a WGA Award nomination for Powell and Linklater.
‘Hit Man’ Is the Latest Netflix Feature to Become a Series
Netflix is no stranger to turning its hit movies into streaming series or vice-versa, though Hit Man is a slight outlier given that it’s a standalone film. XO Kitty, for instance, was a spin-off based on the To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before trilogy of films. The streamer has also been hard at work at turning the Chris Hemsworth-led action-thriller franchise Extraction into a television series, even as Extraction 3 is filming this year. On the flip side, Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man concluded the saga of Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy) from the original hit crime drama earlier this year, with a sequel series in the works to carry Peaky Blinders into a new era. With Linklater‘s movie, the streamer evidently sees an opportunity to build on Johnson’s story, perhaps with more outlandish disguises and clients to intermingle with.
Hit Man is available to stream now on Netflix.
