‘Firefly’: Beloved Sci-Fi Series Returns Courtesy of Dynamite Entertainment!!

24 years after getting unfairly cancelled, a beloved sci-fi series is finally returning, but with a twist. Firefly, created by Joss Whedon, was cancelled after 11 of the 14 episodes produced aired, only three months after its September 20, 2002, debut on the Fox network. Despite its short run, Firefly was a hit among critics and audiences and even received strong sales when it was released on DVD. On top of that, it won an Emmy Award in 2003 for Outstanding Special Visual Effects for a Series and built a loyal fan base that launched campaigns to try to save the series from cancellation.

As fans may recall, Firefly had a brief continuation in 2005 through the space film Serenity, which takes place after the events of the final episode, seemingly bringing the story of Malcolm Reynolds (Nathan Fillion) and his crew to a close. Now, decades later, a new adaptation has been announced courtesy of Dynamite Entertainment, which has secured the rights to create new Firefly comics. The exciting project, written by Mark Russell (Superman: Space Age) and drawn by Lorenzo Re (The Terminator), will be on sale this fall.

Dynamite did not specify when exactly in the timeline Firefly #1 is set; however, as teased by the synopsis, the new series features an all-new adventure in which Mal Reynolds is desperate for cash to keep Serenity flying. At the same time, Simon and Kaylee must pose as a married couple to pull off a heist, but end up with more than they bargained for when an old caper comes back to haunt them. Set in the year 251 after a universal civil war, the 77% Rotten Tomatoes sci-fi series follows the adventures of the renegade crew of Serenity, a “Firefly-class” spaceship. The crew takes any job so long as it puts food on the table; they just want to survive and maybe have better lives. Unfortunately, that’s easier said than done as they face constant challenges on the new frontier, such as the flesh-eating mongrels called Reavers who live on the fringes of the universe. Featured in Firefly’s ensemble cast besides Fillion are Gina Torres, Alan Tudyk, Adam Baldwin, Jewel Staite, Morena Baccarin, Sean Maher, Summer Glau, and Ron Glass. Apart from Glass, who passed away in 2016, the entire cast is also set to return for an animated reboot series, though details are scarce on when that will come to screens.
