Adult animation is hands down one of the harshest categories to judge after just a single season. Understandably, though, since it is niche, it’s usually hard for a new adult animation to build an audience and carve out a reliable watch time. Prime Video‘s latest cancellation feels especially brutal. Aubrey Plaza recently took it to Instagram to share her sentiments about the disappointing news.
Kevin co-creator Aubrey Plaza contrasted the streamer’s decision to end the series with the early days of Parks and Recreation, when NBC kept the show alive long enough for audiences to fall in love with the characters. Some comedies arrive fully formed; others need a network or streamer to believe in the voice before the numbers catch up. This pattern has been clear for shows like BoJack Horseman, Rick and Morty, or perhaps even Bob’s Burgers. All of them needed time to build their respective audiences. But in today’s crowded streaming landscape, if a show doesn’t hit the ground running, studios often call it quits.
Plaza insists that Kevin deserved that kind of runway, especially with a cast that included Jason Schwartzman, Amy Sedaris, Aparna Nancherla, John Waters, Whoopi Goldberg, Gil Ozeri, and Ben Rodgers. The premise of the show follows a spoiled house cat whose life falls apart after his owners break up, forcing him into a New York City shelter where he joins a family of strays and learns independence the hard way.
Why Did Prime Video Cancel ‘Kevin?’
Prime Video has not given an official reason for canceling Kevin, but Aubrey Plaza’s own statement points to the likely reality: the show did not get enough time or audience traction to justify another season in today’s streaming climate. Adult animation is already a difficult lane because it needs viewers to buy into a strange voice, a specific comic rhythm, and a cartoon world built for adults rather than families. Her frustration suggests that streamers now move faster, judge harder, and cancel niche comedies before audiences can turn them into cult favorites. However, Plaza ended her statement on a positive note, concluding:
“Sadly, we are living in a different time in our industry. I hope the machines won’t ruin everything. Maybe Kevin will find a new owner someday.”
