Disney+ and A24 UK just announced a collaboration nobody saw coming. The two studios are teaming up for the first time on a dark comedy-drama that puts one family’s buried secrets at the center of everything.
What to know about Disney and A24’s new series Dad
Disney+ and A24 UK are collaborating for the first time on DAD, a comedy-drama series from writer Clem Garritty, Deadline reported. The straight-to-series order follows three adult siblings whose lives unravel after their father faces a historic murder accusation. Garritty also created Showtime pilot Jonah Kills and currently writes on Charlie Covell’s Life is Strange.
The series centers on Sammy, Ned, and Jess, who are forced back together by the shocking allegation. The murder in question allegedly occurred during their childhood, pushing them to confront long-buried family secrets. Their journey also exposes what the show frames as the uncomfortably hilarious realities of the present.
Multiple major networks pursued the project before Disney+ won out in a competitive bidding situation. The BBC, ITV, Sky, and several others all expressed interest in the series. DAD now carries a Hulu Original badge, though casting details remain unannounced at this stage.
Lee Mason, Disney+ EMEA’s VP of scripted, described DAD as a “bold, brilliantly original series that takes a dark and emotionally complex premise and turns it into something deeply compassionate, surprising and sharply funny.” He continued, “At its heart, this is a story about family, identity and the unsettling question of how well we can ever really know the people who shape us.”
DAD joins Disney+’s growing international slate alongside Rivals and Alice and Steve as the streamer increases EMEA spending. A24 UK is also developing Apple TV’s The Husbands with Juno Temple and Michaela Coel’s First Day on Earth.
Angela Jain, Head of Content at Disney+ EMEA, commissioned the project alongside Mason. In the U.S., Disney+ and A24 have previously partnered on Hulu’s Ramy and FX’s upcoming The Marriage Plot with Sadie Sink.
