‘A Minecraft Movie Squared’: Director Confirms First Plot Details of ‘A Minecraft Movie’ Sequel!!

There’s almost a year left until A Minecraft Movie Squared is set to come out in theaters, and details about the upcoming sequel have been shared. Following the box-office success of A Minecraft Movie, plans to bring out a new installment immediately were put on the table, and it wasn’t long before a second installment was greenlit. So, what’s to come in this upcoming film based on the popular sandbox game?

A Minecraft Movie is based on the 2011 video game, Minecraft, starring Jack Black as Steve. Also featured in the film are Jason Momoa as Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison, Emma Myers as Natalie, Danielle Brooks as Dawn, and Sebastian Hansen as Henry, who enter the Minecraft overworld, team up with Steve, and stop Malgosha’s (Rachel House) plan to destroy creativity. Since its release, it became a massive hit, but theater etiquette was back in the conversation following the Chicken Jockey meme.

Now enter A Minecraft Movie Squared, the upcoming sequel to the $961 million hit, featuring the return of Black and Momoa, as well as Matt Berry, who previously played a villager named Nitwit, but will be playing a new, unnamed character, and Kirsten Dunst as Alex, who in the game was the name of the female playable character. In a recent interview, Minecraft Movie director Jared Hess and Head of Mojang Kayleen Walters spoke about the upcoming sequel, teasing that it’s “more ambitious” and will explore “really unique locations.” They also noted how Alex was an important character in the games and aim to ensure that she’s “represented in the movie” and has a “great part.” This is what Hess had to say:

“We’re taking Steve and Alex and going on this epic mission back into the Overworld. We’re definitely expanding their abilities and things that they have to do to get the job done.”

Is ‘A Minecraft Movie’ Worth Watching?

Since its release, A Minecraft Movie has pulled huge numbers at the box office, becoming the 5th-highest-grossing film of 2025, sitting between the live-action adaptation of Lilo & Stitch and Jurassic World Rebirth. While critics gave it a low score of 47%, audiences praised it, giving it a 84% on Rotten Tomatoes. ScreenRant claimed that A Minecraft Movie lacks character depth and that there “wasn’t a single good joke in the entire film.” Meanwhile, CBR claimed that A Minecraft Movie’s plot was easy to follow and delved into some poignant themes. Collider‘s Nate Richard gave A Minecraft Movie a 5/10 in his review, calling the first act great but noting that Black‘s performance begins to feel stale “after 15 minutes.”

A Minecraft Movie Squared is scheduled to come out on July 23, 2027. You can stream A Minecraft Movie on Netflix
