‘Aquamarine’ Series in the Works with Emma Roberts to Reprise Role!!

Emma Roberts may not be at the top of the list of A-list stars in Hollywood right now, but she has featured in plenty of projects in the last few years that you may have heard of. She’s famous for her role as Madison in American Horror Story, a character she played for over 10 years before leaving the role behind in 2024. The very same year she said goodbye to the Ryan Murphy-produced horror show, she had a small role in one of the most polarizing superhero movies of all time, Madame Web. She starred as Peter Parker’s mother, Mary Parker, opposite Dakota Johnson and Sydney Sweeney. While Roberts is also famous for her work as Casey Mathis in We’re the Millers, one of her first famous roles came from playing Claire in Aquamarine, the 2006 fantasy movie.

Aquamarine wasn’t any giant sensation when the film first hit theaters in 2006 — it grossed only $22 million at the box office against a $12 million budget, but it has become something of a cult classic in the years since streaming on platforms such as Disney Plus and Tubi. Most fans assumed that the Aquamarine universe was completely dead, but this afternoon Disney announced that it’s officially developing a new live-action Aquamarine series, with Roberts expected to reprise her role as Claire and also produce the project. It is reported that she will only be a guest star in the project, though, so fans hoping to see her in every episode should temper expectations. Sarah Watson, who wrote and created The Bold Type, is writing the pilot episode for Disney’s new Aquamarine series.

What Is ‘Aquamarine’ About?

An official synopsis for the 2006 Aquamarine movie reads as follows:

“When a violent storm washes a sassy mermaid named Aquamarine into their beach club’s pool, best friends Claire and Hailey stumble into the adventure of a lifetime. On a mission to prove true love exists — and avoid an arranged merman marriage — Aquamarine enlists the girls to help her win a handsome lifeguard’s heart. But with only three days and a rival determined to expose her secret, time is running out beneath the surface.”

In addition to Emma Roberts, Aquamarine also stars JoJo, Sara Paxton, Jake McDorman, Arielle Kebbel, and Claudia Karvan, but it’s unclear at this time who else, if anyone, will return with Roberts. Based on the novel by Alice Hoffman, the original film was written by Jessica Bendinger and John Quaintance and directed by Elizabeth Allen Rosenbaum.
