It is a possibility that somewhere down the line, you might need to make a list of the best television series ever made. It is often times a question of preference, but shows like Bryan Cranston‘s Breaking Bad, which is arguably the best TV drama ever, and HBO‘s critically acclaimed fantasy series, Game of Thrones would most likely be high on the list. But have you ever considered a list of the most iconic single seasons in TV show history? While modern shows like FX‘s sweeping samurai epic, Shōgun, originally envisioned as a miniseries, comes immediately to mind. It would be hard to leave out the first season of Prison Break, which was near flawless in its delivery.
Originally designed as a limited series, the first season of Prison Break was nigh on flawless in storytelling and delivery. Premiering on Fox in 2005, the success of Season 1 would incline the network towards developing more seasons, which, in truth, never truly lived up to the quality of the first. Even the most devout Prison Break fan would agree that the series tailed off after Season 1 and lost much of its core following as the story progressed. However, given that Hollywood has seemed creatively dehydrated in the past few years, with most new shows on television being adaptations, sequels, spin-offs, or the most derided of them all: reboots. Prison Break might have an opportunity to redeem itself.
Hulu is poised to lead that charge as it tries to recreate the magic of Prison Break Season 1 with its upcoming reboot. The effort is led by Mayans M.C. co-creator Elgin James, who will be working with a new cast of characters as this version seeks to shift the focus away from the Fox River gang. Among the new faces cast is The White Lotus alum, Lukas Gage, who is set to play Jackson, a politician running for the first time for Congress. In a recent interview, Gage offered fans a juicy update, teasing, “We might see a couple of OGs coming back.” While genius structural engineer Michael Scofield (played by Wentworth Miller) and his troubled brother, Lincoln Burrows (Dominic Purcell), are not currently slated to return, there are several other fan favorites who would make for truly thrilling returns on the rebooted show including Amaury Nolasco as Michael’s loyal cellmate Fernando Sucre, William Fichtner as former FBI agent Alexander Mahone, and Robert Knepper as the truly despicable predator, Theodore Bagwell aka T-Bag.
Hulu’s New ‘Prison Break’ Reboot Is Aiming for a Darker Tone
Filming on the new Prison Break reboot on Hulu is currently underway with production taking place in Los Angeles. As previously mentioned, the new show will take a fresh approach, following Emily Browning as Cassidy, an ex-soldier-turned corrections officer who takes a job at one of the deadliest prisons in America to prove just how far she’ll go for someone she loves. Teasing what is to come, Browning notes that the new show could “get really gritty and get really dark” while encouraging fans to strap in for what is set to “be a wild ride.”
Joining Browning and Gage in the cast are Drake Rodger as Tommy, Myles Bullock as Darius “Red”, Georgie Flores as Andrea, JR Bourne as Junior, and Clayton Cardenas as Michael “Ghost”. Browning promises that the new series will pay “respect to the amazing TV show” that is Prison Break. Paul Scheuring, Marty Adelstein, and Neal Moritz all serve as executive producers.
