Some of the most exciting titles of the year are making their debuts this month, including the most anticipated of all: Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, which hits theaters in just 15 days. Officially announced by Universal Pictures in December 2024, The Odyssey has been in the works for nearly two years. Matt Damon steps into the role of Odysseus, the legendary king of Ithaca, bringing to life his grueling and perilous journey home from the Trojan War.

With only a few weeks left until the fantasy epic’s premiere, a surprise companion release has been announced in the form of a video game. Titled The Odyssey: Defy the Gods, the game is available on Roblox and is rated 18+ for occasional, mild depictions of fear and violence. “Defy fate. Sail home,” the game’s logline on the official Roblox site teases. “A survival sailing adventure across the ancient ocean. Pack a crew, ration your supplies, and appease the gods for the right of safe passage.” Designed to be enjoyed with friends, the gameplay consists of scavenging islands for food, resources, and crew members, sailing while weathering storms, and solving puzzles.

Will ‘The Odyssey’ Be Worth the Hype?

An adaptation of Homer‘s legendary Greek epic poem, The Odyssey is Nolan‘s first film since his Oscar-winningOppenheimer in 2023 and his most expensive to date, with a reported production budget of $250 million. The historical action film is set to premiere on July 6, 2026, in London, ahead of its wide theatrical release in the United States and the United Kingdom on July 17, 2026. The film features one of the most star-studded ensembles of the year, including Damon, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya, and Charlize Theron.

Despite all the signs pointing to box-office success, The Odyssey has faced severe backlash following the release of its first promotional images and trailer. Many purists have been openly critical of the decision to modernize Homer‘s ancient epic, directing their frustration at the film’s progressive casting choices, the use of modern dialogue and American accents, and what some describe as historically inaccurate, sterile-looking costumes. Nonetheless, anticipation remains incredibly high as fans of Nolan are eager to see if his bold stylistic choices will ultimately pay off.
