When Hollywood strikes gold with a formula, it rarely stops at just one success. After Prime Video‘s Reacher exploded into one of streaming’s biggest successes, it was only a matter of time before studios went searching for the next larger-than-life literary hero. Jack Reacher’s imposing physicality, sharp instincts, and commitment to helping strangers in need (so effortlessly brought to life by Alan Ritchson) have resonated with audiences of all demographics, proving there’s much more room for old-school wandering heroes in modern entertainment. Thankfully, Lee Child‘s iconic drifter isn’t the only character built from that mold, and now, Amazon is giving another beloved literary crime fighter the live-action treatment for the very first time.
Amazon MGM has officially greenlit a film adaptation of Deadlock, the second novel in James Byrne‘s Dez Limerick series. The books follow former elite operative Desmond “Dez” Aloysius Limerick, whose day job as a touring bass guitarist often places him in the middle of dangerous conspiracies. While comparisons to Reacher are inevitable, the two heroes bring distinctly different energies to the crime-thriller genre. Like Jack Reacher, Dez is a highly skilled drifter with a knack for righting wrongs wherever he goes. However, where Reacher relies on his imposing frame and stoic demeanor to overpower opponents, Dez is a quicker, more playful protagonist who disarms opponents with sharp wit as often as he does with his combat skills. That lighter, more charismatic personality gives the character his own unique appeal.
The first film, though adapting the second book, will bear the title of the opening book, The Gatekeeper. The story follows Dez after he rescues an investigative journalist who has uncovered damning secrets about Clockjack, a powerful and corrupt tech corporation. After surviving an initial attack, the reporter becomes the target of another assassination attempt when gunmen storm her hospital room to finish the job. Dez swiftly eliminates the hired killers, but in doing so, he finds himself pulled into a vast conspiracy. Determined to keep the journalist alive, he joins her mission to expose Clockjack’s criminal operations, utilizing his resourceful contacts.
The Team Behind ‘The Gatekeeper’
Behind the camera, The Gatekeeper has assembled an impressive creative team with plenty of experience bringing gritty, character-driven thrillers to life. The feature will be directed by Matthew Michael Carnahan, who made his feature directorial debut with the critically acclaimed war thriller Mosul, now streaming on Netflix. Beyond directing, Carnahan has built a strong reputation as a screenwriter, having penned films such as Paramount‘s blockbuster apocalyptic thriller World War Z and the Oscar-nominated disaster epic Deepwater Horizon.
Carnahan will direct from a screenplay adapted by Brian Helgeland, the Academy Award-winning writer behind L.A. Confidential and the acclaimed films Mystic River and Man on Fire. Helgeland also brings extensive directing experience, having helmed films such as A Knight’s Tale starring Heath Ledger and Legend, starring Tom Hardy. Most recently, he wrote and directed Paramount+‘s crime thriller Finestkind and contributed the screenplay for John Woo‘s action thriller The Killer.
The Gatekeeper is a joint production between Amazon MGM, and Di Bonaventura Pictures. No casting announcements have been made yet. However, it will be interesting to see who will step into the role of Dez Limerick and bring this new action hero to life on screen. A theatrical release has not been explicitly confirmed but can be reasonably assumed until further notice of a Prime Video or MGM+ release.
