After getting a cameo in Creature Commandos, one of DC Comics‘ most fearsome villains is coming to James Gunn‘s new cinematic universe. Gorilla Grodd, the simian nemesis of the Flash, will co-star with Skyler Gisondo‘s Jimmy Olsen in the new Superman spin-off series DC Crime. While the series has yet to be formally greenlit, we have an idea of who will bring the ape arch-villain to life.
According to reports, Jimmy Tatro is in talks to star in DC Crime as Grodd. Tatro is a comedian and YouTuber, who has previously starred in Modern Family, Home Economics, Scream 7, and Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice. He also starred on the satirical documentary series American Vandal, which, like DC Crime, hails from creators Tony Yacenda and Dan Perrault. The series is a true-crime-styled docuseries which will pair intrepid Daily Planet reporter Olsen, who debuted in last summer’s Superman, with a noted DC Comics supervillain; the first season will center around the super-intelligent Grodd.
Who Is Gorilla Grodd?
Created by writer John Broome and artist Carmine Infantino in 1959’s The Flash #106, Grodd was a normal ape until an alien spaceship crash-landed amidst his troop of gorillas. Its strange radiation gave the gorillas enhanced intelligence and mental powers; together, they built Gorilla City. However, unlike his peace-loving compatriots, Grodd was evil and hungry for power; with his telepathic powers, he seized control of Gorilla City before he was defeated by the Silver Age Flash, Barry Allen, who would become his nemesis. As one of DC’s most prominent and strangest villains, Grodd has frequently appeared in DC‘s TV series; on Justice League, he was voiced by the late Powers Boothe, while he was played by John DiMaggio on Batman: The Brave and the Bold. He made his live-action debut on The CW‘s The Flash series, in which he was voiced by David Sobolov; he returned on an episode of Legends of Tomorrow, in which he attempted to go back in time to assassinate a teenage Barack Obama.
Yacenda and Perrault will write, executive produce, and showrun DC Crime. Gunn and Peter Safran will also executive produce, with Galen Vaisman overseeing production.
DC Crime is in development; no release date has yet been announced.
