The Twilight franchise has been dormant for long enough that any movement from Forks now feels worth watching. A new series from Netflix was mooted some time ago, but that’s spent a while sitting in that awkward development space where fans know it exists, but not much else. However, we’ve now had a new update that might be suggesting a return to Washington, where it literally rains all the time but men still walk around topless, is getting closer.

Netflix’s animated Twilight series is finally showing signs of life, which means it may be time for Hoa-Hoa-Hoa Season to begin again in earnest, and for everyone to start pretending that those extremely pale, old looking weirdos are still actually teenagers. Nearly two years after the project was first announced, Midnight Sun is moving forward with casting now underway for two key Quileute characters.

The upcoming series is an animated adaptation of Stephenie Meyer’s companion novel Midnight Sun, which retells the events of Twilight from Edward Cullen’s extremely dour perspective. Now, while casting hasn’t happened for the main characters yet, it’s showing that it might be beginning quite soon, because a casting call has been put out for the roles of Jacob Black and his father, Billy Black.

Who Will Star in ‘Midnight Sun’?

That means the series is officially looking for a new version of Jacob, the role played by Taylor Lautner in the original Twilight movies. The animated project is seeking a Native American male actor to voice Jacob as a recurring character, with the description calling for an adult actor to play the young teen role. There’s also a call out for Billy Black, Jacob’s wheelchair-bound father who was previously played by Yellowstone‘s Gil Birmingham in the movies. Obviously we’re going to need casting for every other character too, including Edward himself, Bella Swan, the rest of the Cullen coven, and the legendary figure that is Chief of Police Charlie Swan. Sigh.

Meyer is executive producing the series, with Sinead Daly serving as showrunner. Lynn Wang is attached as supervising director, while Marty Bowen, Wyck Godfrey, Erik Feig, Meghan Hibbett, and Emily Wissink are also among the producers and executive producers.

There is no release date yet for Midnight Sun, but given the animation timeline, the series is unlikely to arrive before late 2027 at the earliest.
