‘Bosch: Start of Watch’: First Look Image Teases the Prequel Series!! Check It Out!!

After years of Titus Welliver defining the character across Bosch and Bosch: Legacy, it was time for a change — at least according to the powers that be over at Prime Video. Welliver continues to play the role in Ballard, the offshoot of the series that follows Detective Renée Ballard (Maggie Q), but as for Harry himself? Well, he’s got nothing going on in the future, as it stands. The past, however, is an entirely different story.

Harry’s early days as an LAPD beat cop are about to get the full origin story treatment in a brand new thriller series for MGM+ entitled Start of Watch, and now, series author Michael Connelly has given fans their first proper look at a much younger version of his iconic detective.

The first look image shared by Connelly on his personal website shows star Cameron Monaghan with his back to the camera, in a star chair with Bosch’s name on it. Bosch: Start of Watch is set in the 1990s and follows Bosch as a young patrol officer in Los Angeles. Rather than continuing the later-life story of Welliver’s version, the new series explores how Harry became the relentless detective who would later build his life around justice and a very stubborn refusal to let things go.

Who Stars in the New ‘Bosch’ Series?

Monaghan leads the new series alongside Omari Hardwick (Power) as Eli Bridges, Bosch’s training officer and mentor. The cast also includes William Fichtner (Prison Break) as Calhern, Keyon Bowman as Tyrone, and Tamica Lee in a supporting role. Welliver is not expected to return in the prequel. Unlike the three shows that preceded it, Start of Watch is a completely new story and isn’t based on any of Connelly’s books, so it presents an opportunity for us to see a raw Harry with a lot to prove. MGM+ boss Michael Wright previously said the project would look at how “one of television’s most beloved detectives became the man we know today,” while Connelly said that looking back upon Bosch’s younger years would end up giving the franchise “uncharted character territory” to explore.
