Ever since the announcement of Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender, it’s been one piece of bad news after another for fans awaiting the Gaang’s feature-length adventure. The film, based on a story idea from original creators Brian Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino and helmed by Lauren Montgomery, faced numerous delays, originally intending to bend its way into theaters in October 2025. Once it settled on an October 9, 2026, date, however, Paramount controversially decided to pull the big-screen release altogether in favor of making all Avatar Studios projects exclusive to Paramount+. Making matters worse is that, shortly thereafter, the entire film leaked online, only further spurring the animators and even the original Avatar: The Last Airbender cast to push for the film to be given a proper run in theaters.
Evidently, the four elements can’t be contained on streaming after all. Variety has reported that, despite the switch to Paramount+, Avatar Aang will now get its cinematic spotlight. Alas, Team Avatar is only going to be on the big screen for one week as part of a limited run in select theaters in Los Angeles and New York from July 24 to 30. Tickets will go on sale tomorrow, July 16, at 9 a.m. ET/6 a.m. PT, with AMC Burbank 8 in L.A. and the AMC Empire 25 in Manhattan each hosting three showtimes per day. In the meantime, the film will still launch on Paramount‘s streaming platform on July 25.
Any theatrical release is still better than nothing, at least. The Last Airbender movie was made to be the first animated movie starring Aang, Katara, Sokka, Toph, Zuko, and the rest to appear on the silver screen, and the first major project in Paramount‘s rekindled partnership with Konietzko and DiMartino to see the light of day. Some fans will now get to see the action as it was originally intended, assuming they can get into one of the limited locations. Restoring the film to its rightful spot in theaters also hints that the studio hopes to campaign Avatar Aang for next year’s Oscars.
Who Will Lead ‘Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender’?
Montgomery worked alongside co-directors Steve Ahn and William Mata to make Avatar Aang a reality, with Tim Hedrick and Christopher Yost penning the screenplay based on the idea from Konietzko, DiMartino, Hedrick, and Kenneth Lin. The story will be a rare look into the years between The Last Airbender and its sequel series, The Legend of Korra, following Avatar Aang as he learns of an ancient staff that could save the airbenders from extinction and discovers another surviving member of his people, Tagah (Dave Bautista). Together with his friends, they set out on a global search to claim that power before the wrong hands can wield it and undo the years of progress since the defeat of Fire Lord Ozai. Eric Nam, Jessica Matten, Román Zaragoza, Dionne Quan, and Steven Yeun take over as the iconic members of Team Avatar for the film, while Bautista leads a starry supporting group featuring Taika Waititi, Geraldine Viswanathan, Ronny Chieng, Ke Huy Quan, and more. Last but not least, Community star Ken Jeong joins in the legendary role of the unfortunate Cabbage Merchant originally played by Avatar veteran James Sie.
Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender begins its limited theatrical run on July 24 in New York and Los Angeles before streaming on Paramount+ on July 25. Tickets are on sale tomorrow.
