Don’t lose your head, but the ever-busy Sydney Sweeney has just landed another project. After pulling off a sleeper box office hit with The Housemaid last holiday season, and starring in the third and final season of Euphoria earlier this year, she’s set to star in another horror film, a genre she previously explored in Nocturne, Night Teeth, and Immaculate. This one will put a new spin on a classic American ghost story.
As reported by Deadline, Sweeney is set to star in Hollow, a new retelling of Washington Irving‘s classic 1820 short story The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, which has just been acquired by Sony Pictures. The film will be based on Lindsey Anderson Beer‘s debut novel of the same name; it is slated to be released this fall. It follows the story from the perspective of Katrina Van Tassel (Sweeney), a young woman in colonial-era America caught in a supernatural love triangle between Sleepy Hollow local Brom Bones and newcomer Ichabod Crane. Beer will adapt and direct her own novel; she previously wrote and directed Pet Sematary: Bloodlines. As she has with many of her recent projects, Sweeney will also executive produce, this time via her new Honey Trap production company.
What Is ‘The Legend of Sleepy Hollow’ About?
Set in Sleepy Hollow, in upstate New York, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow tells the tale of Ichabod Crane, an ambitious schoolteacher who sets his sights on winning the hand of Katrina Van Tassel, the daughter of a well-to-do farmer. His rival for her affections is Abraham “Brom Bones” Van Brunt, a local trickster. Crane is rather superstitious, and is unnerved by the local folklore, especially the tale of the Headless Horseman, a decapitated Revolutionary War soldier who is said to wander the woods, searching for his lost head. He soon comes face to neck-stump with the apparition himself. The story has been adapted for the screen many times, dating back to the silent era. Notable adaptations include an animated segment of Disney‘s The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad, which features a song by Bing Crosby; Sleepy Hollow, a Tim Burton horror film that reimagines Crane (Johnny Depp) as a detective investigating a series of decapitations; and Sleepy Hollow, a Fox series that saw Crane (Tom Mison) sent to the modern day.
Sweeney is currently filming Gundam, a live-action adaptation of the long-running mecha anime series. She is also slated to star in the Edith Wharton adaptation The Custom of the Country, and the Housemaid sequel The Housemaid’s Secret.
Hollow is in development at Sony Pictures; no release date has yet been announced.
