Having grossed roughly $3 billion worldwide, the Deadpool franchise remains one of Marvel‘s biggest box office success stories a decade after it began. The first film premiered in February 2016 to widespread critical and commercial acclaim, grossing $782.6 million against a modest $58 million budget while breaking several box office records. Deadpool 2 followed in May 2018, earning even more with $786 million worldwide on a $110 million budget. Then came 2024’s Deadpool & Wolverine, which became the franchise’s biggest financial success, grossing nearly $1.4 billion globally to become the highest-grossing R-rated film ever.
Following the release of Deadpool & Wolverine, Ryan Reynolds admitted he wasn’t sure when or if he would return as the iconic scarred antihero. Moreover, in the years that followed, updates on a potential Deadpool 4 were scarce. Reynolds had also previously suggested that he envisioned Deadpool appearing as a supporting character alongside The Avengers or the X-Men, rather than leading another entry or officially joining either team.
Now, however, fans finally have an answer about the franchise’s future. Speaking at Fanatics Fest, Reynolds confirmed that another Deadpool film is in the works. During the discussion, the actor teased that there are “some really deep cuts” from the character’s history that haven’t appeared in any of the previous films and could make for exciting additions to the sequel. Story details remain under wraps, which isn’t surprising given that Reynolds only recently confirmed the project. Watch Reynolds share the update in the player below.
‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Became the Franchise’s Biggest Hit
From Canadian-American filmmaker Shawn Levy, who wrote the screenplay with Reynolds, Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, and Zeb Wells, Deadpool & Wolverine became a global phenomenon upon its release while ranking among the most expensive films ever made. The film stars Reynolds as Wade Wilson/Deadpool alongside Hugh Jackman as Logan/Wolverine. In it, viewers see the Time Variance Authority interrupt Wade’s quiet life and recruit him to help protect the multiverse. Forced to team up with a reluctant Wolverine, Deadpool must stop an existential threat before his world is destroyed.
While the superhero threequel earned a Certified Fresh 77% score on Rotten Tomatoes, it received the lowest critical rating of the trilogy, trailing the original Deadpool (85%) and Deadpool 2 (83%), both of which are also Certified Fresh. Deadpool & Wolverine’s cast also includes Emma Corrin, Morena Baccarin, Rob Delaney, Leslie Uggams, Aaron Stanford, and Matthew Macfadyen.
