‘Peculiar Stars’: Apple TV to Adapt ‘Fourth Wing’ Author Rebecca Yarros’ Next Novel!!

Rebecca Yarros is easily one of the hottest authors on the market at the moment for any studio looking for a buzzy book adaptation. Easily the most high-profile production of her work is the forthcoming Fourth Wing series at Prime Video, with Michael B. Jordan executive producing the romantasy epic through his production company Outlier Society. Not only that, but it already has a showrunner in Meredith Averill, a director for the first episode in Fallout‘s Lisa Joy, and, perhaps most crucially, the author’s seal of approval. The sweeping world of the bestselling Empyrean novels isn’t the only creation of Yarros‘ coming to life, though. Between Lionsgate snapping up her 2021 romance The Things We Leave Unfinished, Netflix grabbing In The Likely Event, and Amazon adapting The Last Letter as a feature, there are plenty of irons in the Yarros fire at the moment.

With all the action surrounding the author, Apple TV isn’t sitting idly by. Deadline has reported that the streamer has pre-emptively scooped up the rights to the author’s next book, Peculiar Stars, to adapt into its own series backed by Yarros‘ Full Measures Productions banner. Apple emerged out of a competitive field of producers and studios all clamoring to get their hands on the romance book before it hits store shelves on November 17. A search is now underway to find the writer who will tackle the acclaimed author’s work, while Yarros executive produces.

Peculiar Stars won’t be the sweeping fantasy that Fourth Wing is, but it does lean on her romantic prowess with a sizzling slow-burn story. It follows a young woman named Callista Morgan, who’s thrown into a desperate situation after a cyclone turns her routine sailing trip into a months-long fight for survival alongside her fiancé’s ex-army medic cousin. Although they try to push their feelings aside, being stuck on an island together and relying on each other for so long forces her to start questioning the nature of love and what she wants out of life. Their time together ultimately makes their eventual homecoming back to their lives of privilege more complicated and dangerous than their temporary island sanctuary.

‘Peculiar Stars’ Is a Big Expansion Into Romantic Television for Apple TV

That Apple TV landed Peculiar Stars is a bit surprising. Compared to Prime Video, Netflix, and other streamers, it hasn’t been a big player in the romance genre with its originals despite series like Off Campus, Heated Rivalry, and Bridgerton all becoming massive hits. The period drama The Buccaneers has found plenty of success, and the gothic The Essex Serpent was lauded by critics, but otherwise, matters of the heart have not been at the forefront of Apple‘s strategy. Securing a high-profile Yarros adaptation might change that, though, as it seeks to widen its footprint in a field that has been delivering consistent winners.
